Bob

When reading the article, I almost got the impression that this was something that happens regularly inside WoW - which ain't the matter at all.

The infection mentioned in the article is something that is a part of a boss-fight in a 20man raid instance. When that instance was released, more than a year back in time, the developers had forgotten to "remove" the disease when the players were finished with the boss and left the instance, leading to them bringing it with 'em to all the major cities, and as one find the biggest concentrations of players in those cities, it spread rapidly.

It was kinda fun and interesting to see how it all acted out, but of course it didn't take many days before a hot-fix was applied to correct the bug :)

Wasn't it something to do with them forgetting to take it off the pets?

Not really sure how it relates to real life, surely most of the players who spread it for fun did so because its a game.

Penfold

I don't know.

There's plenty of people who have been jailed for deliberately infecting people with the AIDS virus etc.

I agree, but I wouldn't like to build a model based on something happening in a world that has no consequences.

Haha yeah i remember that i was great fun to see all the uproar haha.
Some people went about yelling AIDS AIDS AIDS which was a bit harsh though O_o

I too believe they forgot to remove the disease from pets so when the hunters teleported back to the major cities all hell broke loose haha.

It's in the news now because it is being used to study the behaviour of people in an epidemic.
QuoteResearcher Professor Nina Fefferman, from Tufts University School of Medicine, said: "Human behaviour has a big impact on disease spread. And virtual worlds offer an excellent platform for studying human behaviour.
"The players seemed to really feel they were at risk and took the threat of infection seriously, even though it was only a game."

Luminance

yeah but that bug was fixed in the next patch, so that still leaves a full year of reaction time ;)

Bastet

Aye, from the hunter pets it spread to the NPC guards in the city, who regenerated more health then the poison took off, and thus from there it went back to all the players.

Bug was live maybe 3 days or so over a year ago. Kinda late post, i think we had one back then in the WOW section :flirty:
