Our washing machine has packed in, after only 4.5yrs of daily use.
It's a Zanussi Aquacycle 1100XC.  The main control module has fried and it costs £120 for a new one.

Apparently washing machines these days (unless you get Miele) are only expected to last on average 4-5yrs.

I'm looking at a Bosch, which seems to be the best of the mid-range (can't afford Miele at £500+).

Those of you who know what a washing machine is :), do you know of any make that seems to be better than others?

Well me and my family has always gone Miele. Imho worth it. My sisters has been running for well.. 10 years maybe more.

Edit: Got into a chat at the bureau/office, seems LG have a good rep. Two Zanussies (washer+tumbler) that has been going for 7-8 years, both.

I've got one of those LG direct drives. Still going strong after 6 years which is fantastic considering our water is like liquid rock (plenty of calgon needed!)

LG direct drive here too.  5 years old and still going strong, and still whisper quiet.

Keep clear of Hotpoint they have poor build quality and simply fall apart. Also comet and currys do a take away service for your old product so you can get them to deliver your new machine and get your new product up and running before they leave your home :).

Have had 2 hotpoints, first we had for 3 years and sold it with house. Never failed and seemed fine. 2nd HP we've have had for just over a year, still fine but there is only 2 of us and its not used daily.

Will definitely look  into getting a Miele when this one dies.

Penfold

Bosch / Zanussi are fine, good mid-range machines - ne'er had a problem with them.

Hotpoint and Ariston suck.... big style. (imho of course).

See you can't win here Thulsa.

Our Hotpoint just died after 3 years, but we replaced it with the Hotpoint from my rental house that has been going strong for 6 years, and still works great.

Hotpoint suck, get a hotpoint.

Looks like Bosch or Zanussi.  Bosch give a 2yr guarantee, however not much point as I wouldn't expect any probs until at least 4 yrs.

Door came off my washing machine yesterday I strongly advise against a Hotpoint.

My hinge broke after 4 years, I bought a new one for a fiver, fitted it in 5 minutes and bingo.
