Hm.. I bet there's going to be split opinions on the ABS thing. Sure it might be more realistic since road cars normally have it, but still.. I'm not sure. Haven't had time to try it yet

Mille Sabords

I agree that road cars normally do have it, on the other hand:
1) did they have it in the 90s? The cars in LFS are about this old it seems.
2) race series would probably ban ABS - I hope the servers are allowed to chose wether to allow it or not, and taht it is displayed in the server choice screen.
3) I'm pretty sure it helps with the XFG on AS7, for the "high" speed downhill braking before the nasty right hander - I experienced ugly lockups there on Friday night leading to high speed crashes (when Jouman was running 2.32s leaving us all in the dust :)) and I am nearly sure the ABS will sadly remove this.

If we are to voice an opinion here, I would say no to ABS - except when using race_S sets.
If we are not, well... you did not read this.

I don't agree. One of the things that bugs me in LFS is that people can  reduce the brake force so they in effect can run almost as they have ABS.
I cant see the big deal with ABS when adjustable brake force is still possible.
I think using high brake force with good technique still will be faster than ABS. But I also think most people will be fastest with ABS.

looks like we will have to wait a bit longer for the patch.  Ahh well, better late than bugged.  I did think that the time between the release and test patches was a bit too short.

Uh oh, there's gonna be a looooooot of of angry people now. Everybody strap yourselves in, we're in for some serious whining!

So when they said it was ready ... it wasn't ready. Or it was ready but then they decided on the limited setups so now it isn't ready.

C'mon people. Help me out here. There's gotta be a conspiracy in there somewhere :D

I just read that thread and I'm disgusted by the attitude of some/a lot of the little t**ts. It is painfully obvious that Scawen has employed Kunos. :norty:

I do like the news that the setup will be limited though.

Mille Sabords

I just went through the thread announcing a delay, what a depressing read!
So many kids complaining it could even be funny...

I have done some further ABS testing and I kind of like it.
I do not use it as intended but I have found a use that helps improving my driving.
I increased the brake force in my set (from 620N to approx 750N) and using the F9 - tyres display I can easily see what goes wrong and when (the ABS triggers an orange color for the tyres).
This helps me achieving the following:
Find the correct amount of braking pressure for the different corners, at the threshold (just before the orange shows up, or only one tyre locking)
Find the correct brake balance - that should be even better with a RWD when using engine braking.

All this without locking up and crashing every other corner.

After a few laps with the ABS on I turned it off and was able to achieve the same (slow :)) lap times without major lockups and a better use of the brakes, at a much more realistic brake force.

So the ABS is for me a great learning tool, I can now imagine getting closer to threshold braking and using more of the traction circle. I am still in doubt whether it is a good thing for races or not, though.

interesting post mille :)
Not installed the new test patch yet but sounds like its worth a try :thumbsup2:

I agree with Mille. I've been using it as a learning tool, but not in quite the same way, but will give his idea a try. If I use the ABS during testing it lets me play with braking force/distances and gives me a small safety net if I get it slightly wrong, so less frustration for me. Doesn't protect me from the occasional bout of over optimistic driving/rank idiocy, but then what would? Not sure about its use in racing, driver aids seem cheating somehow...
Sad news about the delay of the Sirroco, but I would rather see it delivered later to the impressively high standard set by the developers, than early and not quite right.

lol @ Ron's post :roflmao:

I haven't tried the test patches yet, but I don't mind the idea of ABS if its supposed to be on the car.  The question is, are the road cars in LFS race preped (as some discussion in the test patch forum might suggest) or are they straight from the show room? Myself, I reckon they are bog standard road cars. I'm guessing in a modern road car, like the VW, you cant turn off ABS for safety reasons.  In that case I think it should be forced on for everyone, and it wouldn't bother me.  About which (road)cars should have ABS, I think most of them are new enough to feature it.  The road cars I didn't think would have it are the XRG and XRT, but according to scawen they would of had ABS, but the XFG (based on a seat Ibiza) would not and the UF1 of course :) .

Some clarification by Scawen:

QuoteI think it's fair enough to discuss ABS brakes as they are an important feature of this series of test patches.

One bug report was that the "Braking - GTI" lesson text is now quite wrong and inapproriate for a car with ABS brakes. I'm thinking the XF GTI should have its ABS removed, specially as the real car which it was loosely based on does not have ABS brakes, so it was a mistake fitting it with ABS in the first place.

However, the car that the XR GT was loosely based on does have ABS brakes so from that point of view it should be there in LFS. I thought that the XF GTI had a slight advantage, because if I visit a host with XFG and XRG, most people seem to be driving an XF GTI. So I was thinking that leaving ABS on the XR GT would be good for balancing. However, I am told the XR GT is usually faster and a quick look at the hotlap tables seems to agree that this is the case. So I'm not sure about the consequences of removing it from the XF GTI and leaving it on the XR GT.

One the related subject of whether it should be there at all, I think it should definitely be fitted to those cars on which it has been enabled, except the XF GTI and possibly the XR GT (as discussed above). I'm considering the possibility of passing the ABS state of the setup to InSim so host control programs can decide what they want to do if someone uses ABS. At first sight it does seem to be a good idea to allow hosts to enforce a no ABS rule, but I have not yet looked into the code for this.
Looks like it might be removed from XFG at least

EDIT: doh, that's exactly what Sean just wrote.
