Politcal correctness gone potty!

BBC Radio 1 has said it will stand by its ban on the word "faggot" from the Pogues' 1987 Christmas hit Fairytale of New York to avoid offence.

I heard it last night and I did notice it had been censored, I also noticed that  in the previous week they played the un-edited version. Someone has taken offence and complained.

Should radio stations censor The Pogues' Fairytale of New York?

                      Yes
4.92%
                      No
95.08%
                       15797 Votes Cast

The word has quite a few meanings, the one I relate the most is the pork meatball things, which is what I thought it always referred too. (as they are horrid things imo.)

I think the term faggot in referrence to a homosexual is an Americanism, which I assume is the meaning the Pogues ment for it, but thats just a guess, no idea really.

Anyway, the song sucks meaty pork balls (like most xmas songs) so I couldn't care less :D

edit: interesting the Poll on BBC now only shows 330 Votes Cast. Something iffy is going on there!

Decision to censor has been reversed. NSS.

QuoteWhy has the BBC reset the vote on HYS front page?

Are you really so embarrassed at your utter stupidity at censoring this song that you don't want this evening's HYS'ers to see the thousands who voted over the last six hours and which effectively "turned around" this stupidity!

You should be ashamed at this further censorship. Attempting to hide your own foolishness.

The original vote should be reinstated as well as including the subsequent votes since you reset it. Will you ever learn?

looks like I'm not the only one that noticed the vote get reset...

Surely a 'faggot' is a bundle of kindling wood gathered from the forest. No?
That's what I always thought! :norty:

I'm a little confused how a song this popular for the last 20years is suddenly, as of this, christmas offensive (and now unoffensive again).
I don't see why the radio even care so much. If a song is offensive enough to filter then why not just not play it, rather than b**tardise it by cutting bits out. The idea of radio is to play what the audience want, if nobody wanted the Pouges they wouldn't play it.
If some people don't like it then they've every right NOT to listen to the station and boycott it etc. Why let <5% of the population dictate what the other 95% can listen to?
Juggling Hard Disks over concrete floors ends in tears 5% of the time.

Must admit I could listen to it any time of year and each time still love it.
