Calling all racers ...

I have installed a mod onto the server that allows racers to reset their cars but at the expense of a two minute stop-go penalty. This will be tested during tonight's 1 hour race at Westhill.

  • A two minute penalty is accrued each time you reset your car.
  • You can only serve one penalty at a time.
  • You must not leave the pitbox until the timer has passed 120 seconds. Your penalty will remain if you do.
  • If you have penalties to serve you will receive a message every lap as a reminder.

I've amended the Welcome screen accordingly. This should be interesting. :norty:

Not saying this is a bad thing, but just want to raise one thing to discuss.

The penalty of 120secs (2mins) as used in Westhill with XRR ment that you would be down 1.5-2 laps because of that (1m32-36s lap times) and probabably close to 2 laps when you count the pit in and out times (and also the time lost in the incident which made you to reset your car). Now, I have a bit of problem racing with anybody who has lapped me even if I was faster, because overtaking somebody can cause unwanted incidents. And I really don't want to cause that to anybody. Besides I don't have any chances anyway being down 1-2 laps. Of course it's not just racing for win, but it can be odd driving slower than capabilities and avoiding overtaking. I have joined shorter races mid race but only that I can get a feeling for the combo before the next race (i.e not racing). In the long 1h race, rac...driving 45mins this way was just too painful idea last time. In SO1, the 120secs means in effect close to 3 laps down and short track means you have to be avoiding other cars all the time. So this 120 penalty is in effect same as pitting and restarting the race.

Of course resetting car is not realistic and it should be punished in some way if it is allowed. But I don't want to be a moving road block or sunday driving when it could cause harm to real racers.

Comments?

I agree that 2 mins is too long, maybe half a lap would be better. I got stuck in the gravel at about 40 mins into the race and decided to spectate as running around the track getting in the way and being blue flagged all the time gets boring very quickly.... just to finish last.

There's something to be said for returning to default. If you then go into the kitty litter you can decide for yourself if your race is over. Realistically, if you get bogged down in a 'IRL' race then it's 'game over'
While these things must be tried in the interests of good play/fairness or what have you, my own view is that it doesn't add much to our way of doing things. I do understand the frustration of being out of the race in the first corner but hey, **** happens! Dead Men Racing is, in the general run of public servers, pretty hardcore, so the next time you see a 'beach' don't jump in it! Stay on the tarmac.

I have nothing against the old way or this system. My point was just that in the old way if you flip, your race was over in effect. Now with the 120 sec penalty, your race is over too in effect. So there isn't any difference really. So if this system is supposted to give you some chance after a reset, it is not working.

Your chance of winning is, quite rightly, over. Your race isn't.

Interesting idea. Haven't tried it, as I haven't been near my desktop machine in months, but I am in favor of it.

Depends how you define the word 'race'. If you are 3 laps down, no way you can race with anybody else except maybe with somebody else who has resetted too. Again...let me say this again...you can do this too in the old system, except then you could be down 20-30 laps. The problem is just that with either system I rather retire, because I feel myself to be just annoying object to those who are actually still racing with others. There is no difference to me.

It's just my thinking that if there is a change, there should be some effect it makes. If it makes no difference, why change it? If the idea is to keep resetted cars still in race, then reduce it to e.g 60 secs. If not, then it would be lot easier to remove the system and return to the old way. If you ask me, I was happy with the old system. Only if we are going to try MRT, then this might be a good idea with e.g. 60 sec penalty.

Just my opinion

I think the 2 mins penalty was too long (suggest value for this mod is 5 mins  ). I've reset the default to 1 min.

I can't see us using it again unless, like WE1, there are gravel traps likely to cause beaching.
