My first rant!

As i was cycling to my job (as an intern) at Ten Cate, i saw a couple ducks and a few squirls, lots of birds and a clear blue sky with a healthy sun rising somewhere in the east. So far so good, then I took a right turn after the trainstation, cycled up the Ten Cate terrain and parked my bike somewhere at the end. Still very happy, whistling a heavy metal tune entered the building, to my desk, turned on my laptop ( in the mean time putting on my working shoes ) and checked my compagny mail, my gmail lauged at Garfield as usual typed in deadmen.co.uk/forum and then it happend:

[/rant] WHAT THE H... is this? Even at school they don't blog forums. They don't even block flabber.com or biertijd.com or eredivisie.nl etc. but they block deadmen :angry::angry::angry:
atleast 25% of the employes smoke 4 times 15 min everyday, though they only have 2 breaks and use up 1 for it!!!
Looked up the compagnie rulez, and as long as the site is a forum, and contains no imbedded games or movies, and you don't post anything that could harm the compagny, then you free to visit/post on it.
So i confronted them with it, but ofcourse i'm only an intern, and because they read "Gaming" they don't want to unblock it.
I love my work there, and i don't spent alot of time surfing, and i understand that sites like youtube.com or hyves.nl (sort of myspace.com) are blocked, or nederland.fm (its a gathering of online dutch radios) but blocking a forum just because it spells "gaming" thats just plain mean! :angry::angry::angry: [/rant off]

So i'll be missing out the weekly a bit of fun before the weekend in the morning and afternoon :crying:And i have to find something else to spend my minute breaks, to clear my head for a few secs

It annoys me too when smokers (no offence meant to you smokers out there) are allowed to pop outside several tmes a day for 10 minutes and noone minds a bit! If you are caught on facebook.com or something then you are truly screwed! Where is the fairness in that?

Well in all fairness, a lot of sites are blocked at work to prevent people from spending hours on there. They do pay you and expect you to do a proper job. Its resonable they block off some stuff to get thier moneys worth.

As for smokers, i care not either way. Its not like the rest of us spend all our time working, thiers is just more visuable.

I'm a smoker, and work onsite with the customer, certain sites are blocked (get un blocked everyday), yes i pop out 2 or 3 times a day but i also work in exess of 10 hours a day (only paid 9-5:30ish), all of my adult life (in IT) i have lived with certain limitations to what is acceptable, it seems that non smokers turn a blind eye to smokers who work longer hours. It was recently brought into my FPR that i spend an ufull lot of time talking to Liberator and that was to stop, when i brought up the fact that i work from 8 till 17:00 or even 18:00 (rare 1800 finish) and the fact that i actually dont take any breaks as ther is no one else to do my job whilst i am gone (entitled 2 an hours brake), boss was not aware of this and glossed overit to further tell me the i take 5 or six breaks for smoking... not true i have one one on the way into work (10 min walk from car park (that isnt paid for by the company)) i have one at 11:00 and one at 14:30 and sometimes i will have one at 1650 (if time allows) so at the moment not am i only doing 2 persons jobs (after ditching a project managers job back at him as he was getting ****y about it and he was reading all the internet so at the time me doing 3 persons work project manager getting paid for jack), as one of the jobs mainly takes about an hour a day the otehr job was supposed to take up 70% of my time takes up more than that as i have no free time to myself at work and longer hours.... bearing in mind i am a fully qualified NT Server admin (NT4, 2000, 2003 (as well as all client OSes (going for vista and server 2008 (also not paid for by the company as promised)), because i asked a simple question to 2nd line one of the customer (1st & 2nd line now back with customer) managers starts giving it some next thing i know im doing paperwork and the office B*tch jobs i.e change management for shifts (3rd line) this is the new role that has no papaerwork no training and nobody knows jack about how its going to work in a 3rd line basis so i have had to do all the database design and web design work myselfas well as the other job which is to keep a database of root passwords up to date which is being replaced (already has) so there is no point to me actually doing that job for the foreseable future, as for the change management job this is taking up not only working life but also personal life that i could be spending with my young family (2 girls and the wife).. So you cant get on a single page use your noggin and get round it (bable fish works well) or an internet proxy end of the day we all have problems and the grass is not alwasy greener on the otherside you just have to kow how to tend your own lawn to be able to get on in life

Oh i get it all, you got a underpaid job, working overtime all days and get a lot of flak from the smoking breaks.

Its just nasty to read without formatting.

I personaly dont have a problem with smokers as long as they get the job done thier hired to do. An preferably dont smoke near my place of work, allthough with a couple of gallon of stuff that burns 3 times eazyer as gasoline i doubt they will ever get close hehe.

notice no CAPITALS as unix people hate those (not in forum shouting terms either)

I like the option of having either/or not just the cmd line (xterm doesnt count)

OK, so maybe a quarter isn't going to be enough.

Although I understand you can get Minesweeper and Freecell for Linux now, so not all of your Microsoft skills would be wasted...

No, we just like it when the operating system allows you to decide if you want to use capitals or not instead of deciding to do it for you, just before it BSoD's.

You know better than to start that "Windows is better than Unix" thing again, you never win and always end up stomping off.

I think the whole point is that a lot of companies (including several I have worked for) spend a lot of time and effort stopping you doing things at your PC like looking at some websites (even if it is in your own time), playing solitaire etc, whereas they don't put so much time into the more obvious smoking breaks.

Of course that doesn't apply to ALL companies but it did/does with Lumi's.

By the way I have nothing against people going for smoking breaks, if you can do it, then do it! My problem is with self important bosses who are not fair in their practises. I mean...blocking 'gaming'? Tough luck Lumi :sad:
