Another problem 'fixed'

I installed AVG 8 on my PC the full version.  I have the free version on my laptop.  My kids use Messenger as well as me.

The Problem:
One Live Messenger account (mine) on my PC only would not sign in!  It would just sit there twiddling its fingers, no error message nothing!

The other accounts mostly worked.

My laptop signed in to Live Messenger ok.

So obviously a problem with my PC and my specific account on my PC too (or so I thought).

Answer:
I tried several things but as you have gathered from the title of the thread, the issue is with AVG 8 and it's Web Shield.

AVG are apparently aware of this problem which doesn't always surface straight away and as happened with me it doesn't happen with each account on the PC either!

There is a workaround only at the moment because AVG are 'working on it'.  Simply disable Web Shield for MSN and Hey Presto MSN now signs in as normal!

Note: By the way, don't disable or eben set to Manual the AVG Watchdog in Services.msc because while the Tray Icon will load, the Right Click Options will be greyed out and you won't be able to access the main AVG interface at all!

This is interesting and thanks for bringing this up jabbs. I have been having net issues since installing avg 8. Dropping from servers, not being able to browse pages etc. I was an avg 7.5 pro customer and they wanted me to go to avg8 a free upgrade probably to use us as testers :P.

I have disabled avg 8's web shield and unticked all the boxes in the menu just to be sure. Pages are loading fine again. Before pages were loading slowly. Is web shield included in the *free* version?

Also my msn was doing the same tryining to sign in but just stuck on the signing in page no error.

Avg are returning emails from tech support very slowly 4-5 days which is pretty poor and shows how swamped they are. COmplained and reported it to the supervisor of tech support :D.

Haven't had any problems with mine on either of my computers at the moment, but definitely good to know about in advance.

Webpages may be blocked, load slowly or not load at all. Slow as in 28k dial up speed.

Glad I could be of service :D I try and post any solutions to problems I find because I have the theory that SOMEONE out there might find it useful :D

As for AVG 8, my feeling is that it is a feature rich application but it slows things down to do it.  The Search Shield for instance can slow web searches.

Additionally, any application that installs features (especially ones that plug in to IE and FF) is going to have some sort of overhead.

The Web shield does NOT come with the FREE version.  The FREE version gets the Search Shield.

You do have the choice to install them both or not I might add.

Right i did a complete uninstall of avg 8 as the webpages were driving me nuts. They were loading very slowly i.e. crashing out or loading at 28k modem rates.

I have gone back to avg 7.5 pro with a clean install and it runs fine.

I'm not going to avg8 until i am forced to :D

Weird how software acts differently on different systems aint it? My PC is running nicely now that I've disabled the Instant Messenger protection.
