MORE SPOILERS

Quote from: Venom;248804********SPOILER WARNING*******************

Just seen 3.10 to Yuma - I was loving it right upto the end and then I stopped making sense and really disapppointed me.
You can't spend the whole film building up a character to be pure evil only to give him a change of heart at the end....

:(

Quote from: Thulsa Doom;248878Kind of agree.  Was a great film, ending did disappoint slightly.

I agree that the ending is disappointing, but to me, it was mostly the fact that he let his goons shoot on them when they ran to the train, I know for Evans to be the hero, but no need to endanger anyone or anything like that. Maybe that was the only way, I don't know, since he could not explain that to the riders - as he keeps saying, how difficult it is to stay in charge of the gang.

Some good discussions here

Doorman

Added to to list of best films seen this year. "Good night and good luck"
George Clooney directs and stars in the story of Ed Murrow and the McCarthy witch hunt of the 1950s. Brilliant.

Now that looks tempting!

The best I have seen on that subject, and here best as a word should probably be watered down, is Guilty by suspicion with De Niro. He plays almost mechanically as always, same facials etc., but it still makes me think of Stasi...

At the last day in the year I can add the following films:

Oldboy (2003)
"An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, he soon finds out that not only his kidnapper has still plans for him, but that those plans will serve as the even worse finale to 15 years of imprisonment"

I like the twist and when the details are revealed, one of the better twists. Note however, that this film has its own approach to "gore" or what you'd like to call it - as fx when the lead guy eats a live squid which really doesn't want to end up in his mouth.

Michael Clayton (2007)
"An attorney known as the Fixer in his law firm comes across the biggest case of his career that could produce disastrous results for those involved"

The movie is average in telling the story, but the acting is excellent - and the plot has some nice twists.

Everything Is Illuminated (2005)
"A young Jewish American man endeavors to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrainian village, that was ultimately razed by the Nazis, with the help of a local who speaks weirdly funny broken English"

The awkwardness and strangeness beats the plot, but I could not help but get sucked in. It has a bit of Wes Anderson-funny-apathy-weirdness to it (Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Ltd, The Life Aquatic, Rushmore)

The Third Man (1949)
"Arriving in Vienna, Holly Martins learns that his friend Harry Lime, who has invited him, recently died in a car accident."

I finally got around to see it. It is brilliant. The directing is outstanding to say the least. The acting by Orson Welles in the circus wheel fx is awesome. Considering this is '49 it is a 10/10.

Dr Sadako

For those of you who haven't seen it yet I recommend Let The Right One In. Great movie.

"Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love." Albert Einstein

From 2008 the only two films that stand out in my mind were Gone Baby Gone (best film of last year and one of my now favourite films ever) and The Dark Knight which just speaks for itself really. If you haven't seen gone baby gone or haven't heard of it just go out and watch it, don't read any reviews or look up the plot or anything just go out an watch it, you wont be disappointed.

Browne

For sheer Gothic bloody-mindedness, great SFX, a good laugh and all-round entertainment try Van Helsing

#24
Quote from: Dr Sadako;268531Blindness (2008)
Seven pounds (2008)

Haven't seen Blindness (added to list), but watched Seven Pounds...sadly predictable, down to the jellyfish, waste of talent in Will Smith who is a great actor, thought Woody Harrelson was hamming it a bit, nevertheless entertaining.

SPOILER ALERT!!

On the same vein Meteor, Path to Destruction, predictable, but entertaining. I think its a made-for-tv thing. I do like Christopher LLoyd, though he didn't last long.

I agree there is especially one part in the middle of it that makes you quite disgusted.

I think Seven pounds is best when you know as little as possible about it. Although I did like the story.

delankster

watched 3 films this last wk:
Seven pounds
Slumdog . . .
Electric mist

As said £7 was far too predictable but an ok watch.

Slumdog millionaire.  really enjoyed this film, definatly worth seeing

Electric mist
Tommy lee jones detective thriller. Slow at best , a few good scenes,  but overall not one off his best films.
It is better to stay quiet and act the fool, than to say something and remove all doubt
