You may know from HERE that we have bought new switches for the LAN.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU BRING A CAT6e network cable to connect to the network.

Thanks

(We shall also be auctioning off our current switches and cat 5e cable at the LAN (proceeds to Community funds) )

Is there any particular reason why you're specifying cat6? I admit all our new installs have cat6 in the wall, but we've never bothered with cat6 for datapoint to end user or patch panel to switch, and we've got some pretty large areas of the network that were installed a few years ago running gigabit over 70-80m lengths of cat5e with absolutely no issues. I've never seen cat5e have an issue with gigabit. Getting it for your kit to uplink the server and the switches is perfectly reasonable, but asking everyone to go out and get cat6 for their machine-> switch connections is a bit much IMO.

Of course others may have differing opinions :)

I have absolutely no idea () but I've asked a man who does know.

you're right. We're using Cat6e cable for the switches and servers etc  but I've just been told Cat5e cable is fine to use everywhere else (although you're welcome to bring along some cat6e cable if you so wish I guess).

When I was told we were using cat 6e cabling I kinda presumed - erroneously - that we were specifying it everywhere.....

As you were then:flirty:.

Mailed this to tea a few weekks back look at the cons, possible cat5 issue, that could be the reason why

Quotefound this on cnet dont know if it will affect ppl at the lan, might give you a heads up for a solution before the lan

Pros: Nice physical package, zero setup, flexible (autosensing) portage
Cons: Drops connections when loaded, 1000baseT connections require Cat 6 cable (5e won't do)
Summary: 1st problem: My 2 servers with Linksys gigabit NICs wouldn't connect with Cat5e cabling. Had to go out and buy Cat6.

if ppl want to use 1 gig would they need cat6?

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

I can see us needing the old switches as a backup just in case.

Pen what cat6 do you want us to buy?

I can only find cat 6 and not cat6e is one of them better?

Also can cat6 work with a normal 100 meg switch as thats all have at home?

Cat5e will work with Cat6 infurstructure, we should be fine, if you want to get a Cat6 then do.

If you're only on 100mbit ethernet does connecting yourself with Cat5e slow down the whole network, or just you? (If it's just you it's not a big deal as it's already limited by the network adaptor)
Then you have the joys of working out who has what and swapping cables round to get the fastest overall network speed.
You might want to turn it into a D&D problem and use Dijkstras Alogorithm. Who said A-Level maths was useless.

No it wont be effected the whole network just the information being sent from you and to you will travel the links at max rate then be limited if you are on the network card that negioates at 100mb.

For example

GhostMjr is sending you  a file he is connected to the LAN at 1gb, and you are connected at 100mb.  The switches between you and ghost are all at 1gb.  So the data is sent out at that rate till it comes to you port on that swtich then it will be sent down there at the rate you are conneted at.

The switch will look and see that it cant send that information as quickly and buffer it till it all sent.  But will send out other data passing through the switch at the rate the links are.

But to be honest you wont notice the differnece at the LAN.  The main issue we are going to have to contend with is the leeching if there is going to be any.

Hope that helps.

The only leeching that will be done will be for game patches and game maps / updates. There obviously won't be any leeching for anything else as that would be illegal :thumbsup2:

Instead of everyone ordering there own cable I would be more then happy to take some orders and do a bulk one and bring them all to the LAN, save on everyone paying delivery fort a £3/£4 cable.

Cat6 5m = £1.99
http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&&ca580=Category%206%20(CAT6)&store=4&cat=24&subcat=2427&ca436=5

Cat6 10m = £3.75
http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&&ca580=Category%206%20(CAT6)&store=4&cat=24&subcat=2427&ca436=10

I reckon 5 meters would be more then enough?

If we can get the order above the free postage mark i'd be interested.

Pen have the new switches had new cat 6 bought for them already?

Err I think for gaming purposes a 100mb link will be sufficient. So all this talk about 1gb is pretty immaterial. A standard CAT5e cable will be sufficient.
I think? :g:
A nice to have but not a requirement.
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.
