Thanks Whitey.  Card sent via Funkypigeon, it will be posted tomorrow.  It's addressed to Stephen & Hazel from all at dMw.

I feel I should say something but can't figure out the words. Look after him Whitey and whilst I don't know them, my thoughts are with his family and friends. You Scots are a tough breed, I wish him a speedy recovery.

#20
He's looking a lot better and is able to breath on his own now. He only has one drain in his left lung and it should come out in the next couple of days. They have removed the sedation and he should hopefully wake up over the next few days but something I hadn't realised before yesterday was that he had a minor stroke during the heart surgery and they don't know what affect that may have on him, if any. He does have regular movement on all of his limbs though so we're hoping for the best. They don't plan on sorting his bones out until next week now.

Fingers crossed Whitey, the card should arrive with his wife this morning, so they're in our thoughts.

Unfortunately it has become clear due to the increased movement on his right hand side that his left hand side has been affected by the stroke.  He is responding when asked to squeeze with his right hand and his eyes have been open a number of times for a few seconds at a time but he is not responding to movement etc in front of his eyes.  This is not abnormal for the type of trauma he has been through and the addition of the damage due to the stroke.  He has no drains in his lungs now and can breath for himself and has not been on any sedation since last Wednesday and has been taking paracetamol for pain relief since Friday.  He is making slow steady progress but it is going to take time.

I hope the stroke has not affected him too badly. I guess that they can not start the treatment to address the affects of the stroke until he has mostly recovered from the other things. The issue is that they say there is only a 4-12 week window after a stroke and that if mobility has not returned in that time then it is unlikely that it ever will.

Fingers crossed and give him and his family my best wishes next time you see them.
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

Whitey are there any updates?
A friend of mine had brain surgery last week to remove a tumour and they nicked an artery. She basically had a stroke and is now also paralysed down one side. She is making steady progress. We have heard very encouraging reports from other friends about someone they knew who had the same problem back in Novemeber last year and now he's doing 10 mile walks with his dogs.
The brain is quite a clever thing and will rebuild neural paths so here's hoping that Thulsa is making steady progress.

That's great to hear.

Stephen is back in Dumfries in a recovery ward and is making slow steady progress.  The physical stuff is all doing really well and he is responding more to stimulation (including his left side) but is still not able to communicate or react to visual stimulation.  I could give you a better update if you grab me on TS sometime.

I'm just back from seeing him... A lot has happened in the last week after a few weeks of very slow progress.  The biggest thing is that Stephen is talking, it started with just the odd word over a couple of days but he is now saying a lot more (not to the point you can converse with him but it's a great step forward).  He is also focusing on you when you speak to him and follows you with his eyes, I'm pretty sure he knows who I am and he definately knows Hazel and the kids.  He has also started eating (only a couple of days and only liquids) but he can swallow and they plan on introducing more solid food gradually.  So it's been a great week and I hope he continues to make as good progress.
