Wondering if anyone could help me out with my headset.

I recently purchased a Turtlebeach PX5 Wireless Headset from Amazon, i purchased it mainly to use with my pc but also my ps3.

While everything on the Ps3 works fine the mic just doesnt seem to want to work on the computer, its connected through my optical connection on the back of the pc. I have tried updating the drivers and even a full reinstallation of windows nothing seems to work, all i get through is static... I have tried contacting Turlebeach so are awaiting their responce, hopefully someone can suggest something to try.

Thanks Dom

Got a reply from Turtlebeach:

Optical audio cables are one-way communication.  This cable only  provides audio from the PC to the headset.
The PX5 was not designed to be used as a PC headset.  The PX5  was made as a gaming headset for the XBOX 360 and PS3. However, the PX5 can also  be used as a fully wireless headset for PC or Mac. You may need to do some extra  configuring or add features to your PC before this will work.

Please be aware that the PX5 is not a USB Headset.  It's USB  connection is for programming the headset, and will not be able to carry any  audio signals either to or from the headset.

To set up its chat configuration, your PC must have a  properly-installed Bluetooth interface device.  These will often be built  into laptops, but most desktops and some laptops will need a USB adaptor or some  other extra part to add a Bluetooth interface.

The PX5's mic functions through its Bluetooth interface, when used  wirelessly (such as it will be in PS3 mode).  You will have to pair the  headset to your computer's Bluetooth adaptor (usually accomplished by finding  "Add Devices" in your control panel's hardware settings) and searching for  devices while the PX5 is in pairing mode).

Make sure this Bluetooth interface is used by an individual chat  application like Skype or Ventrillo so that your separate chat audio controls  will function as you would expect, but make sure the digital output is still  your default Playback device for the computer.

The PX5 does not require a device driver for use in either Windows or  MacOS X. The PC will not "see" the PX5 in its list of connected devices, unless  it is connected by Bluetooth, and when connected by Bluetooth only the Bluetooth  interface will show up.

Seem's straight forward to me, but i wonder if quality of audio will be affected?

The quality will be worse than a wired mic but most people will not notice the difference.

Not recommended for studio recording, but for gaming and chatting on skype they will be fine.

Anything sent over the net in terms of voice will be heavily quantised to use as little bandwidth as possible and will be sent over UDP anyway.

Its amazing how little bandwith needs to be used to send a mono signal as the frequencies are reduced from 20hz -20000hz to about 40-5000 on a log scale. A Block interleaver makes a huge difference over UDP, as the human brain is incredibly good at filling in small bits of missing data.

That was with my old mic, ive just purchased a bluetooth adapter and mic seems to work fine, will try with TS later to see quality. Its odd as surely bluetooth transfers at 30Mbs?

Hi DA,

had the same issue when I bought my playtronix backbeats... the answer lay with the bluetooth driver I was using as it was the factory shipped (HP and and Sony ones on the laptops that where the problem)... you will need the WIDCOMM bluetooth drivers although search for the details of where i got them from is now lost in memory.... these WIDCOMM drivers enable the A2DP stereo sound as well as the mic to be used at the same time I just have to tap the phone button when i want to make a softphone call (bt) or skype call and whilst enjoying my chanting monk music I click the other button on the headset or in the windows control panel for bt devices....

hope this helps

Seb
Are you going to come quietly, or do I have to use earplugs?
