Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

clarification, you do not need to bind your login to your hormail/outlook/live account.. you can create a local account just like before

Seems they fixed the new PC discount hack. You need to include a valid Windows 7 key and if it's an older key installed on a machine earlier than the offer window it will not authorise. So it seems in the UK at least £14.99 is for new Pc purchases only.

Quote from: TeaLeaf;361513Sorry, but W8 is simly not a desktop-suitable OS at the moment, so I'll not be running it any time soon.

^ Same thing over here.

Perhaps W9 will be an improvement, just have to wait and see.  Actually hoping that linux gets a push, since steam is delving into that area.

I think it's because my copy of W7 is a boxed item and not an OEM copy. Still I'm not installing it so it's mute. role on W9.

I find it rather desktop friendly

Sparko

i have it installed on my laptop and I find it quite good, would never have installed on my rig though that's for gaming not browsing.  I like the apps side of it ( I don't own a tablet so still pretty new to me) I spend a lot of time on Wikipedia and the app is a lot more useful than browsing a webpage as is the facebook app etc...

I still think they could have included a start menu though, the desktop just looks odd without it. speed wise its very quick, boots up in literally 10 seconds or less although that doesn't mean that everything has loaded and ready to use especially if you head straight for desktop.

I think its got good potential, nothing has annoyed me yet (it doesn't take much to get me annoyed :P) so am happy with my £24.99 buy :)

Display Fusion which I use in Windows 7 has been upgraded to work with W8. While it's mainly a multi monitor application and a fantastic one at that it also has a nice feature that brings back the start button on any and all monitors being used. So if you've upgraded to W8 and have two or more monitors it might be worth checking out Display Fusion 4.3.

Well, I've been running Windows 8 Pro since Friday.

No obvious hardware or driver issues, everything works (so far) so that's a mite better than Windows XP at launch.

The general use of the OS is a little zippier. Things like "pause" on file copy is handy with several files flying around.

BF3 runs nicely although I got off to a false start with TeamSpeak 3 Overlay plug-in causing BF3 to be unable to launch.

Remote desktop from the office works as before.

Metro is the only hiccup. It isn't the start menu replacement that Microsoft have touted, it's their attempt at "Rocket Dock". Switching from any application back to Metro is laggy, a bit like ALT-Tabbing in and out of a full-screen game. It has a very "bolted on" feel. It is pretty to look at and using "OblyTile" I have put in sexy icons for my games and applications. When you launch any windows programs (as opposed to Metro Apps) Metro quits to the desktop to run whatever program you chose!

I've avoided using Classic Shell or Start8 just yet, as I want to give Metro a fair crack.

The SSD drive has speeded up my machine as well (Windows Performance Index of 7.6) and boot up from Blue Windows icon to login is around 9 seconds.

The only "Bug" seems to be with ClearType fonts on the desktop. Everything looks blocky and turning ClearType on or off makes no difference. Is this an ATI video driver (12.10) issue or a problem with Windows 8? No hits on Google so far...

Going to play with Hyper-V tonight. Can I run a visualised Mac? Watch this space!
