A vote is attached to the $55 million 'Letter from the Chairman' asking backers to vote for their preferred 'Wave 4' ship class.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14184-Letter-From-The-Chairman

Choices are:

  • Search and Rescue Ship
  • Passenger Liner / Transport
  • Boarding / Assault Ship
  • Repair Ship - Crucible Announced
  • Minelayer / Minesweeper
  • Salvage Tug - Eliminated
  • Recon Craft
  • Science / Hospital Ship - Endeavour Announced
  • Third Starter - Eliminated
  • Deep Space Fighter (Twin Engine)

So what did you fancy?

I voted for the Repair Ship.  We don't have anything that will do that aspect yet and it might turn out to be something that could be active in combat - imagine a tight formation of ships with a repair ship at the centre, continuously repairing the combat damage taken by the other ships.

I liked the Science/Hospital ship idea, but there's too little info on it in the name to let you know how useful it will be in practice.

Not too fussed with most of the other ideas, SAR was nice but again I'd like to know more about the role before voting for it as right now the game doesn't have a lot for people to do with it.

I went for deep space fighter but either hospital/science ship or recon sounds nice. I'm guessing our Idris driver is hoping for a recon :D

I've added the available choices to the OP to aid the discussion.

A lot of the roles could be served with combinations of current ships e.g. SAR = Hornet Tracker + Lancer.

The Repair Ship and the Science/Hospital Ship would be great group assets but I'm looking for a class that would also be fun to play solo ... and I'm struggling :g:

A Salvage Tug captain could be fun as could a Recon Craft (combined Ghost+Tracker).

Went for the Recon Craft :)

Deep Space Fighter for me - I want a ship that can go solo longer range but still hold its own in a fight. Something as a change from Exploration craft.

Hospital sounds right up my street. I was looking at the SAR craft, but unless they offer something VERY specific, i can't see how it would differ from what is already on offer. Most of the core ships can be converted, and its even mentioned in the description for some (Cutless I believe). I've already said that i'm interested in support roles, so this kind of thing is my groove. :coolio:

I went for Science / Hospital.  I like that it's not an obvious gameplay mechanic, as it'll mean a little more thought will be put into it than it would have had without a dedicated ship.  For example - salvaging is obvious.  You have a ship designed for getting useful stuff from wreckage.  The science ship could be a little harder to pin down and result in more innovation.

I also love the concept of a hospital ship.  It seems like a glaring omission at the moment with the currently proposed death mechanic.

Voted for the Repair Ship  and could see the logic of a Science/Hospital ship in the fleet, but I've had enough of hospitals:no2:

With our recent ArmA 3 battles, just looking at the word 'Minelayer' made me shudder.

Totally off topic..... been looking at Arma 3 myself.... is it something i can play solo initially to get to grips before i come and completely fail with you guys ? i.e. is there a single player element Ala BF4 ?

TeaLeaf

There are some training missions, but tbh I'd dive right into multiplayer with dMw on a Sunday night - the help on TS is invaluable and you'll very quickly get the hang of working with the squad.

So far we've lost the 'Third Starter' and the 'Tug' but the following two have made it through to the drawing board ...

The Science/Hospital Ship

MISC Endeavor-class Research Platform â€" The MISC Endeavor is the company’s most prestigious ship: a dedicated research platform capable of carrying a dozen different space science packages, running the gamut from advanced long-range scanners for jump point identification to additional shielding for near-stellar corona research. Externally, the Endeavor is dotted with sensor hardpoints; internally, the main compartment is centered on a large research laboratory which can be configured for use by a wide range of scientific disciplines. The Endeavor’s main compartment is modular, allowing an alternate configuration as a Hope-class floating hospital. This variant is employed by the UEE and other organizations as battlefield support, capable of getting Marines and pilots back to the battle as quickly as possible! When outfitted as a hospital, the Endeavor’s docking bay is capable of maintaining a single Cutlass Red ambulance. The Endeavor has also found its way into the service of less reputable organizations, where it can has been modified for everything from narcotics production to black market surgery.

The Repair Ship

Anvil Aerospace Crucible â€" A so-called “flying toolbox,” the Crucible is the ship you want on your side when you suffer an asteroid collision or survive a pirate attack! Structurally, the Crucible consists of a cockpit, drive unit and workshop. The Crucible’s workshop is versatile: it can be used as a base for conducting EVA repairs (complete with requisite tool storage) or it can use magnetic grapplers to attach directly to a ship hull. In this situation, the workshop actually opens to space and allows a repair crew direct access to a damaged ship. The workshop can either maintain artificial gravity or allow for zero-g repair operations, depending on the needs of the mission. The Crucible’s cockpit is also outfitted with an array of repair tools, including dual purpose mounts that can exchange weapons for tractor beams and remote manipulator arms. The Crucible is also part of a larger planned repair system. For larger project, independent sections of support struts and drive units, called the Miller ERS (External Repair Structure), can be locked together to form a sort of scaffolding around a damaged starship, the next best thing to an orbital drydock. A standard ERS unit includes a small drive, thrusters, magnetic attach points and modular hardpoints for mounting tractor beams, repair tools or weapons. ERS segments each have a code defining their shape (P1 = Straight section, P2= Left turn, P3 = Right turn, etc.) with the multiple layouts allowing extensive zero-gravity construction as necessary. In the case of damaged capital ships, like the Navy’s Bengal carriers, hundreds of ERS units might be formed into a latticework serviced by a dozen or more Crucibles.

Voting continues here.

Seems like I voted for the lowest one thus far. Typical.
