I wondered if anyone else has come across a similar problem and if so whats the easy get around :-

I've bought (yes thats right bought) a couple of current music cds which play ok on any usual HiFi stuff but when I go to play on my Pc the cd installs its own player
software, trying to play via windows media or creative player I either end up with a load of hassle attempting to get it to play or it just wont play.

I also had probs when trying to copy from Nero it didn't seem to recognize the music files.

The music files them selves are embedded  in a sub folder.

As a regular purchaser of CDs its only v.recently I've come across this.

Anyone ??

yea ive had that with a cd i brought, if i remember corectly the only way i could find to get round it was to install its own player, let it do its thing, exit out of it & go from there.

Being employed in the Music industry, I am very aware of these new formats, I have to test their compatibility over my network.

The software you get with them is the only supported way of playing and extracting the music on your pc, so you can make an mp3 out of your CD tracks but it has to be digitally signed by Windows Media or the Creative software to say its yours. An unsigned mp3 isn't possible out of the box. Perhaps it is with 3rd prty software, I've not checked.

The only reason to make an unsigned mp3 is to play it on an mp3 player that doesn't support digital signatures (or of course illegally share it) so you don't get that option very easily and if the mp3 won't play on your personal mp3 player, the music industry says tough. I suppose it's to do with the fact that 25% of music sales have been lost to piracy over the last few years.

I know that creative products will allow you to play, upload and use digitally signed mp3s, my Nomad works great with albums i haev downloaded from itunes or tiscalli.

Very noble of you to buy CDs though,  :) . I may be a finally get a pay rise or Xmas bonus before the decade is out.

I've heard that simply taking a black marker and drawing round the edge of the data side stops the PC reading theautorun instally player thing and then you can play as per usual?
Dunno how true that is tho...

I believe the previous attempt at anti piracy was thwarted by a black pen. The type you have on your disc probably isn't, but you could try it, it won't ruin the  if you have a steady hand.

BlueBall here is advocating me doing something illegal breaking the rules of the Forum - which I of coarse couldn't contemplate being such an upstanding member.

I demand he be stripped of his Rank and flogged to within an inch of his life and then just stripped.

"I hardly think that telling people to push Shift constitutes trafficking in a (copy-protection technology) circumvention device," Halderman said. "I'm not very worried."

Thats from the article and should get BB off the hook (possibly).

I found a fairly easy way of sortig this - if it's the cd's that have the little sticker on the front saying copy protection, the same ones that try to install their own softeware (note I know this not as I copy to distribute illegally but to make copies for my car CD player):

When you stick the cd in don't allow it to install it's software (remove it from your system if u already have)
open media player and go to options
in privacy tab uncheck boxes to uniquely identify player and automatically acquire licenses
Dont allow media player to retrieve cd info from net (another check box)
Then go to copy music and copy the cd tracks (they should all read unknown) to your "My Music" folder
Then use your fave burning package to create the cd from the files you have burned

Works for me everytime on new albums with that software
If I wanted you to understand I would have explained it better

Ok so I exaggerated, misconstrued, told blatant lies and was generally underhand, sly & backstabbing. (and these are my good points).

BB should be pleased I went to those lengths just to get him kicked I hope he appreciates it:D

The  point about the anti pirate software also preventing the actual playing on some machines is interesting, one of my cd's will only play on one of my pc's - it won't even install the onboard player on the other machine.

Hurrah! Maybe an end to the the start of non-piracy!  :D
Oh and maybe the record companies will realise that a 500% + profit margin isn't really necessary on every CD.
