Afternoon,

We've setup another server on one of pnuts' boxes, it uses a 128tick version of boomer's config.

fetchnet.co.uk:27015
-=[dMw]=- dMw Setebos CS:Go Public - 128 tick

So far it looks promising - "var" has dropped from a min of 0.3 on boomer, to 0.03 on the above server, with no noticeable spikes. We'll know more when we're able to get the server somewhat full for a proper test, hopefully tonight/tomorrow.

see you on Setebos!

Great work man! I'll be around this evening to test it.

Have you also installed the same admin mods to the same patch levels?  Without that the comparison is of limited value. (assuming you are trying to do a comparison that is)

Yes I've installed metamod and sourcemod, only thing that may not quite work yet is the weapons restrict.
Hoping to see a full server tonight to see it performs under load.

Just as a note on the side, we've already been through various versions of MM and SM on boomer, and have never seen an improvement.

Edit: I forgot to add that the pings will be higher than you are used to on Boomer, as my server resides in germany.
Edit2: server specs as a comparrison:

Intel Core i7-920 Quad Core @ 2.67GHz
8 GB DDR3 RAM
2x 750 GB SATA II HDD
One main difference is this is not a VM, it's a dedicated host.

TeaLeaf

The Vm should not make a difference seeing as it is what most hosting companies use.

This was a very nice server to play on, mainly highlighted by my 6 man ace and someone getting killed when a smoke or flash hit them, long live the pnuts server!

Agreed, performance seemed pretty decent @128 tick, even with 20 players on. We did see a couple of spikes every now and then, but the vigilant mr pesteh was keeping an eye on my server processes at the time and the spikes can be attributed to the various other processes running on the box (cronjobs for generating server stats and the likes).

I will leave the server up and running for now, but I would like to encourage people to go back to playing on Boomer for our regular games.

I know Browne for one, really struggled with his ping. His ping to Boomer isn't always great, but his ping on my server was even worse making it unplayable and we definitely do not want to exclude any of our regular gamers moving forward.
Thanks all for joining and helping us test and get a comparison.  We'll have some discussions and see where we take it from here.

Not entirely, Vmware generates a bit of overhead delay, its a far better use of resource management if the machine runs multiple hosts, if not your just adding a extra layer. The way VM handles resource far differs from a dedi machine, as VMware pools it. :D

There are so many silly metrics one have to take into account when handling VMware load, examples are reservedCAP, wait state, ready, system, extra, used and so forth.
Tho it help BA5 has VT-d/VT-x with EPT and TSX-NI

Death by acronym. If you ever reach a point where a VM overhead is causing a performance issue, you're already too close to your hardware ceiling - time for an upgrade. Anyway, that's off-topic - sorry :)

For the record, I haven't noticed any performance/network problems when I've played on Boomer recently (not much, admittedly). Would it be worth gathering some traceroutes from people to see if there's a particular network hop causing us bother?

The issues are apparent every night Tut, if you fire you netgraph (net_graph 1 or 2 via console) you will see the sv and var variables shooting up into the red several times during a session.
Does not appear to be related to the path the traffic takes getting to/from the server, unless it's the translation from physical NIC to the virtual one. but that's not something we can troubleshoot from home.

When I set up the Vanilla CS:Go server on the Linux VM (running on the same hardware as BA5) you said it performed well.  When did the performance issues start on it??

pesteh

the vanilla server suffered from the same lag spikes (high sv/var values) with more than 7-8 players.
