I bought my hd 6990 for about £600 when it was released in 2011 and its served me well until now(5years is good going).  I cant game at 2k+ with this current card and with games coming out.

So now ive purchased the best single card gpu i can at present time i can now look forward to playing ark with some detail, and the likes of star citizen (which ive not even been near as my card cant handle it at moment even on low) and every other game i choose to play on as best detail as i can.

Then - i can purchase my 2k/4k monitor shortly without having to worry about fps issues.

Surely thats the point???

Also if VR floats your boat (which we know is doesn't for you Tut, prototype and all that ;-) ) and you want a card that will reduce your chances of puking all over your keyboard, then go for the most powerful, it'll only get better as drivers optimize and VR becomes more mature. For me I feel I can sell my 980 for half the price of a 1080 and accept the price of upgrading. The architecture of the 10XX series is so far ahead of the 9XX that the upgrade is justified in my opinion. I'm also waiting to see what AMD do in the meantime and if they can produce a card that competes with nVidia. So far they are being a bit slow about it.

The problem with the 1080 is stock. There aren't any fore sale.

Been on the evga auto notify list for two weeks. Only once in these two weeks it was available, for 5 minutes..

Yup tell me about it.... i place an order pretty much on release day and at last check was 91st in the queue.  And with the small quantities its coming into stock each time itll be xmas by time i get mine 🙈

But the strix is at the severe end of the stock issues.  As been said there is a massive shortage on most 1080 non-reference cards.

Im following the forum post on OCUK

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18732799&page=202

Over 6000 posts of disgruntled customers.  Although within there there is an evga rep fiving statua updates (Ben@evga) and gibbo from OCUK replying to posts and trying to keep the customers up to date as much as possible.

The wait continues....

OCUK again amazing customer service - massive problems with Asus Strix OC cards being produced - they offered to swap cards for those waiting for them at no extra cost.  I swapped out to a Gigabyte G1 - and can't believe i've been subjecting my eyes to anything but how pretty things look now.  Going to start playing Witcher 3 again from start as it's so pretty and shiny now. (Running at 42oC after 10-15mins play on air)
Just need to save up for my new monitor to try out 2k/4k :D

Aye, Gibbo is very customer oriented.  Had some problems with their CC reps some years ago, and has to escalate to a CC manager to get my problem fixed (their mistake), but all in all, ocUK every time.

Ben also diverted an extra shipment to them from pre-order cancellations of east European countries.

I went for the 1080 Zotac AMP Extreme myself, expecting a shipment next Monday.  There seems to be an issue with fan revving, but I'm planning to set a minimum fan speed level so that the fans never switches off.

It has the best clock speeds of any current 1080, and was personally recommended by Gibbo himself.

Engine clock (base): 1771 MHz / (boost): 1911 MHzMemory clock: 10.8 GHz

Yup I seen Gibbos recommendation but had no idea when I Could get one of the AMP extremes - plus I was against paying more for a card i already shelled out £600+ for.

Been running GPU-Z tonight  whilst playing Ark/OW and clock been sitting at 1950Mhz, Mem Clock of 1250Mhz, and Highest Temp hit was 69oC (not even attempted to OC this card at all, so be interesting to see what I could achieve if decide to do so)

I bet the difference is amazing. Ark shoudl be rather nice, I would love to know if you can ptu everything on Epic and all effects maxed and still play with decent framerate.

Epic settings with 0 clutter runs at 98 frames stable @ 1080
i7-6850K, HyperX DDR4-2400, and Zotac 1080 AMP Extreme all running at stock speeds.
