I've picked up the game again, but mainly playing quite late at night.
It's actually a lot more fun using a steam controller vs my warthog - although that could be that I don't have space to setup the warthog right now.

Gah, trying to fight in a CZ, even low density I get my arse handed to me in either a Cobra or Vulture.
Can't even get one kill! This blows, I don't recall being this bad, or has the AI just gotten a lot better?

The AI are pretty lethal yes. You can't over commit, or they swarm on you. Far easier in a squad.

You're not alone man, I was trying a low density CZ in my Krait and had to turn tale and run!

No, you have to leave one to join another, but you can wing up separate from squads, just have to be in the same instance.

I'm trying out mining right now though.

I'm about ready to throw the towel in here.
Spent an hour around belts looking for bounties. Just found cops.
Took a mission looking for a black box "hostiles might be sent". Just found crap cargo, no box and worse no hostiles. As soon as I open up my k scanner on someone who asks me to drop cargo, poof, they are gone. The mission timer is three days, but if I spend another hour on this it's ****.
Went to an anarchy zone for kicks and circled the nav bouy looking for fun for about 45 mins. Nothing turned up.

Total play time since patch, around 6 hours.
Total ships killed zero.

There is literally zero combat outside of CZ I can find, but even teamed with Albert CZ is not doable.
Am I mising a trick here?

Try a less hardcore system. ZTA is better for low level grinding.

I brought in 500k in about 5 minutes alone in the Hazardous Exaction zone near A2 in ZTA. Needs a big ship to work with your Vulture to cover eachothers back.

If you're talking to me I'm currently in a T7, but avoiding scans at the station is problematic ..... saving for a python so I can run trips from the mines faster and safer.
