Hi all,

I am exploring the option into getting a gaming laptop and wondered if any of us here use one?, I'm after some pros/cons for them in comparison to a desktop computer.

The reason I'm looking into the option of getting one would be because of the portability and lack of weight with them, cheers.

Pros - portability.

Cons - everything else.

:flirty:

I'd only get a gaming laptop if you really need one. Otherwise they are inevitably over-priced and limited for what you get compared to a desktop.

I recently helped choose a laptop for my wife and I have to say I'm rather impressed with the one we ended up getting.

https://store.asus.com/us/item/202101AM090000007/A50264-ASUS-ROG-Strix-G17-%282021%29-Gaming-Laptop%2C-17.3%E2%80%9D-300Hz-IPS-Type-FHD%2C-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3070%2C-AMD-Ryzen-9-5900HX%2C-16GB-DDR4%2C-1TB-PCIe-NVMe-SSD%2C-RGB-Keyboard%2C-Windows-10%2C-G713QR-ES96-Eclipse-Gray

I am of the opinion that laptops for gaming tended to be of two types in the past, 1) very expensive and disappointing or 2) everything else was just really for documents and browsing.

This I would call a mid-price latop with a pretty imrpessive spec. I aimed for a 3060 and Ryzen 7 with a 17" screen but when it came down to choosing, this stood ouit as a winner for a little more money. The fact that it has a good graphics card in it and a Ryzen 9 exceeding what we expected to find for £1500. They have stripped out some of the things that are really unecessary, like a webcam, or a screen that is anything over 1080p (given if anyone ever goes for higher res it's probalby on an external monitor). The keyboard feels comfortable an has keys for all the quality of life things, like mute mic, change performance mode, game profiles for sensitivity of the mouse and keyboard lights. The refresh rate of the screen is very noticable. Even at 100% GPU it still stays cooler than 60 dgrees. I probably need to create a performance profile for light use games to limit the FPS a bit though.

The software from ASUS is really imrepssive these days, all the essentials are mnonitored, tunable and it comes with a number of profiles for the main use cases.

A desktop was out of the question as she uses it all over the place, also "destops are ugly and dirty, the dust is disgusting". Also she didn't want clutter on her desk as she does craft stuff on there and likes to keep it clear, also same for the floor, no boxes on there.

The biggest problem with it is that many games don't let you set the FPS lower and this thing will run basic games at insane FPS.

Pros: Portable, Strong performance, looks amazing (lots of rubberized parts make it feel nice as well). Price. (Yes I think that price is good value).
Cons: Not a desktop performance and LEDs (everywhere) but that's a personal thing. Finding one in stock.

If you grab MSI Afterburner you can easily set frame rate limits for either the whole system or specific games.

Your new laptop does seem nice Albert, and no doubt if a desktop is out of the questions a 'desktop replacement' like this is a good way to go.

In 'normal times' (i.e. when GPUs don't cost 2x MSRP) you could still kit out a better performing desktop set up for the same money (these G17s are £1900 in the UK), and have it be quieter, cooler, and easier to upgrade in a year or two... hence my issue with laptops remains. Of course, at the moment you simply can't buy a GPU for MSRP so perhaps things like this start to look more attractive!

Not mine, Sarahs!! She loves it, already playing games she refused to play before, which was pretty much any first person game. I snagged her Control from the Epic Freebie Store the other week and that is running like a dream. Also, I logged her onto my Steam account and authorised family sharing for her and she immediately went right for Alien Isolation!!! Not on my watch I fled the room.

I wish it was mine but for LANs (if they are even a thing agian) I can't justify that price. She will use this for the next 10 years, her last one was a one off Samsung Gaming Laptop which had a 125Hz screen and it was bought in 2012. We stripped the Blueray/DVD burner from fit, then the SSD and HHD. Now the new one has 1.5TB of SSD and 750GB of spinny storage. If one feels they must have a laptop, I think this is the sweet spot right now.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try Afterburner. Never thought of that. Yeah the G17 was an option but she doesn't want an external monitor or keyboard.

as my mrs wanted her MSI gfx 980m laptop back , (i was using it for lifeboat countries between here and Saudi) i bought one of these, put a 1tb ssd in it as well as the 512 that came, and it is epic, plays everything well as it has a 1080p screen, i set frame limit to 60 for reduction in load/heat, but when let loose it flies, well over 100fps in ark on epic and cyberpunk with RTX epic, so should last a few years

pros: Price,, Quick, Small as has 15inch screen, lightweight, has lots of airflow vents, has an actual switch to deactivate the camera
Cons: needed to install a 2nd ssd (not a deal breaker), fans can get loud, mouse hand can get warm if using on a small desk as vents blowe out the back and sides (think hotel), but on a normal desk no issues

I was actually trying to get that one you recommended Sulky, but they are just not in stock over here, so I ended up with the bigger screen and the missus is far happier with that size. But the Lenovos are getting some great reviews and again, price is great given the GPU drought.

And my daughter is getting this tomorrow for her 17th (needed a lappy that would be able to do uni next year) so exactly the same as above, but with a 3060 and 8gb ram,(she plays cs:go , minecraft and ppl management sims so that's ok, but can go up to 32gb if she needs extra umph for data processing if she gets the grades to do her astro physics course, as the processor is good)

i also i am chucking another 1tb at it

Thanks all, I had a look around and figured the prices are not what they'd like to be so I went for a PSU,CPU, motherboard and case upgrade instead. Thanks for all of the advice
