It doesn't have to be a vote for every map, just the these ones admins reckon are unsuitable for whatever reason.

....or in the 18 minutes it takes to cast the votes and count them you could just play the map anyway?  ;)

Seriously though, there should be some sort of discussion before a map is changed.  A vote is a bit long-winded imo, but there should be some form of consultation.  Personally I tend to type the offer of a map change if I think the map is not suited to TCS and the numbers on the server.

If an admin decides to change the map then, as long as he posts a message saying who is doing it, so be it. No vote needed. That's why we appoint admins. They make decisions. If he makes a bad call then debate it afterwards.

On a related note is there any specific reason we stopped the quarterly map submission/vote  from pre TCS days? I used to enjoy the idea of checking out a load of new maps for a week and then getting to swapt the best for the least popular in the current rotation.
Did we feel that it messed about with TCS play too much or was there another reason?

I agree. We need to revisit the rotation.

But, like a lot of things, when people are busy some things tend to drift to the 'back burner'.

I can't be arsed debating it afterwards.  I usually quit the game.  That solves the problem...

On a further related (slightly) note. A few weeks ago I was playing on meathook at about 00:30 with albert and sqounk (and others who have disappeared into a alchohol induced haze) and the admin (albert I think) changed the map after some consultation to fy_pool. Well what a hoot, we really did have some serious fun. Now I know that many discussions have taken place on theme nights and fun nights but what about just setting up homer to run fun maps after 23:00 every night, it adds a bit of choice to anyone playing that late when the servers are not at their fullest.

Its 23:55, after an evening of rose wine and, Havana club and coke, the above makes plenty of sense.

23.00 is 24.00 over here in the Netherlands. A bit late but it depends on which day it is then. Some of us have social lifes BTW, like going to the pub  ;) .

Stryker

I'm with zok on that one.  Now battle field vietnam bots are loosing their appeal I'm gonna be playing CS some more..... I love the fun maps from time to time.

The important thing is if we *knew* a time when fun maps would be on those feeling up to it would pay a visit.  I must admit there would be many a night when I'd not bother with the regular maps but later join for some fun maps.

But this doesn't happen in my experience.

Sorry to back-up DM but he's right - the admin often takes it upon himself to simply choose what he thinks is the most appropriate map and then loads it up.  Sadly this invariably means one of the "overplayed" maps like a dust2.

Not saying it's right or wrong (I personally don't care - I just drop if I don't like the admins choice), but DM is right.

I used to like map votes - problem was the % needed for change was always set too high.  You invariably needed 6 out of 12 people to vote one way, which never happened.
If I wanted you to understand I would have explained it better

We're agreed some form of consultation is needed before changing maps.  Map votes either haven't worked in the past, or are perceived as long-winded.  So why not do this:

Ask everyone to hold at the beginning of the next round.  Bung sv_alltalk on, and then get everyone to sound off with what they'd like to play next.

We're (mostly) all adults here, and should be able to thrash out a decision quick enough.  Shouldn't take more than a minute or two
