It's my Birthday! / SARS
April 24, 2003, 04:01:59 PM
(Lo all, hmmm, maybe I'll play some CS this weekend, it's been a while... been playing too much BF1942..)

Ok, I'm getting really peeved by all the mis-information and distortion of facts being thrown around by the Media in non-Canadian countries when they talk about SARS in Toronto.

I live in Toronto.  I work at a company of 100 people.  I live in a 30 story apartment building with 900 units.  I walk by 1000 people on the way to work.

No-one is wearing a mask.  No one is worried much about themselves (except maybe the one or two whose significant others work in the medical community).  None of us are worrying about it.  No one is being prevented from leaving Toronto.  The whole of Toronto is not under quarentine.  No one can prevent me from coming to visit you.  My Mom (lives 1500 miles away) watches a CBC news special, and isn't worried.

Don't get me wrong, we did wonder for the first half week.  And we do wonder if the odd SOB breaking quarentine won't keep us from eliminating this thing quickly.  Everyone is taking it seriously, and the people in the medical community are scrambling.  We do wonder wtf is going to happen in China and elsewhere in 2nd and 3rd world countries - especially Africa (South Africa has what, 30% AIDS infection rate, and they expect SARS to be MUCH more lethal in people with diseases like that).

The WHO officials who put out the warning yesterday about Toronto did NOT talk to Toronto's, Ontario's, or Canadian health officials.  They made their decision in Brussels, from the sounds of it based upon Media reports alone.

Here is the official word from the people who are on the front lines - and this isn't China, I pay these people's salary and I trust them:

Quotehttp://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/04/23/who_sars030423

The city's medical officer called WHO's advisory "shocking." Sheela Basrur called the advisory "a gross misrepresentation of facts."

A doctor in Toronto involved in the struggle against SARS says the warning against travel to Toronto is "ridiculous."

WHO warned people to avoid all unnecessary travel to Toronto, Beijing and China's Shanxi province because of SARS. The three locations join Hong Kong and China's Guangdong province, already on WHO's list.

Donald Low, chief microbiologist at the city's Mount Sinai Hospital said the community is not at risk.

He says a lack of secondary cases over the past two weeks indicates the disease has been contained in Toronto.
Media stories on CNN are starting out with 5 minutes of awfully distorted information I've heard - yes medical personnel in Buffalo are taking precautions - that's because one single lone "escapee" typically causes a chain of infections in medical settings before it's contained - so it makes perfect sense.  It's only after the 5 minute hyper introduction does CNN start interviewing medical professionals, at which point the professionals say "Sars is 2-3 out of 10 on a scale of infectious diseases".

BBC stories talk about the "outrage of the controversial Toronto mayor Mel Lastman", but utterly forget to mention that every single medical professional in Canada thinks that the WHO advisory is baloney.

From what I've heard, many of the media stories in Britain are 10 times as distorted - especially given your tradition of the Tabloids.  I hope the average Briton doesn't use them as a primary source of information as to what's going on in the world

It's my Birthday! / Bowling for Columbine
April 23, 2003, 06:03:46 PM
.
I'm a Canadian.  A LEFT WING Canadian (not about everything, but in general).  And even I must point out that Michael Moore uses outright distortions of the truth and falsehoods in his arguments.

He's *so* bad that there is no sane person who would try and refer to anything Michael Moore has done as "support" for a given position.  He just goes way way way too far overboard with trying to support his own positions (which in and of themselves may be perfectly reasonable - aka pro gun control) - to the point that I would oppose anyone who attempted to refer to a Michael Moore reference to support positions that I myself support.

The following reference is a little heavy-handed about defending the NRA (I don't like the NRA), but in general it does document *some* of the problems with this movie.

http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html

Even many of the comparisons in Bowling with Canada wrt guns and gun control misrepresent the circumstances or utterly ignore basic logic and alternatives - stuff similar to logical fallicies like confusing "coincidental" and "causative".

Technology Section / tidy cables
March 27, 2003, 04:55:39 PM
Quotei have round cables in yellow. its just all the cables coming from the psu. even though they are raped in clear cable rap they still look messy
Routing and minimalization.

I have an Enermax 430, and it's got like 5 or so big long bundled groups, each set having 2-3 connectors.  I only have 6 drives, so I only need to use two bundles that have 3 each.

And I only use the long one for the bottom three drives, and it's wrapped/tied in such a way that all you see is the one main bundle coming down to the 4th drive, then a hop of two strands to the 5th drive, and the final lone strand hop down to the bottom 6th drive.  These hopping strands are all wrapped or tied together, so that you only see a "single cable" hopping down from the top of the case from drive to drive to drive.

Same kind of thing with drives 1-3 near the top of the case, but use only a bundle that's just long enough for the furthest drive.

Take the other un-needed 2-3 bundles and neatly wrap them and lay them down on top of the top 5.25 inch drive (I have a CDROM at the top bay in my case, and there is enough room up there for the entire 3-bundle bundle of extra power connectors.  Same thing goes for the Motherboard connector, I bundle all it's excess up together and put it above the top 5.25 inch bay, with just enough to reach the MB.

http://blacktower.dyndns.org/N42/cmpt/CKWW...an_DCP_2371.jpg

That looks worse than it is because you can see up into the space above the 5.25 CDROM, and I've still got one flat ATA cable to round (and I want to use a shorter rounded cable in place of the one commercially bought one that's too long for the job).

But *my GOD* is it an improvement over what my case used to be.  Think of 6 flat long ATA cables, totally unrouted hairball of a nest of power cables with the extra's hanging down to the bottom of the case.  I couldn't get at anything on the MB without unplugging half of everything!!  Now I can get at everything without touching anything else.

I suggest we hunt down and execute whoever decided to use flat cables in cases, and anyone still shipping computers with flat cables.

Counter Strike 1.5 / Re: microphone trouble
March 09, 2003, 01:45:05 AM
QuoteI have just spent the entire evening reinstalling my OS and updating everything. :x I just felt like going fubar and I lost tons of settings.

My microphone in CS is FUBAR and if you have any great commands or settings I would be very greatful.

Now I will go to bed and hope for a better tomorrow ...

Hmmm, I don't know what to say.  It's *very* strange the way mics sometimes do and don't work between systems and stuff.

My mic has *always* worked fine, then tonight everyone tells me I sould like crud!

I get out into windows aftewards, and sure enough it sounds just horrific.  I go check things, and nothing is diferent.  But it did sound and look like my voice was "too loud" and was causing horrible clipping and stuff - so I turned off the "Advanced" setting for 20 dB gain.  Voila.  My voice isn't quite as loud as I used to remember, but the quality is just like old times.

Why in heck did that change all of a sudden!?!??  I've always had the 20 dB gain set.  The only things I've changed recently were to update the Nvidia video drivers, and to put in a couple new PCI cards - one USB2 one right beside the sound card, another TV Capture card elsewhere.

QuoteHungry Man Beakfast

Not being one who is concerned with his levels of fat/cholesterol at all even I found this quite disgusting.

And it just looks so appatising in the pictures. I think I have seen better looking food at motorway services.....
:D  :D  :D

I've had one of these!  I noticed it in the grocery store a couple months ago, and just couldn't resist the chance to discover a method of having a good old Sunday morning eggs/hash-browns/bacon breakfast without all the freaking hassle and cooking and pot cleaning (when you're single it isn't really worth it).

Quote1030 Calories
64g of Fat
2000g of Sodium
78g of Carbohydrate (that get turned into sugar before they hit your bloodstream)

 8O  8O  8O  8O  8O  8O  8O

I don't think I noticed the caloric/fat intake!!  Of course that was two months ago, before I began paying attention to such things and working out.

Anyways, let's see if I can remember what I thought.

Eggs - ewwww
Sausages - EWWWWWWWWW
Potatoe thingies - mmmmm, not bad, not great though
Pancakes - mmmmm, ok, better than the frozen ones you can buy, but still *NOTHING* like real pancakes

Overall I gave it a 3/10, and will never buy it again.

I HIGHLY recommend the Swanson BBQ Pork Riblets and the Mexican one (can't find a Swanson's TV Dinners site - poor marketing on their part I guess).

However I'm not eating as much TV Dinners as I used to.  They (along with canned food) are almost universally 30 percent fat (not bad), 20 percent protein (not enough), and 50 percent carbohydrates (too much).

And besides, the vast majority of TV Dinners are bland in taste, like they've been created for old people whose tounges sting when they drink a cola  :x

QuoteGForce 2's are getting a little long in the tooth, maybe that's his problem?
...
P IV 2.53 GHz, GF3 Ti200, 1 GHz PC2100 DRAM and it is smooth at 1024x768 with everything turned up! Think it is a graphic card prob. NB Driver version can make a big difference
...
Frenzy and I are both running a GeForce2 GTS using 40.72 drivers and it runs sweet at 800X600.

Yeah, he's trying to figure out how to afford a GF4 right now :)  Another friend says that UT2K3 looks *way* better with a GF3/4, vs a GF2.  There are some effects that the GF3/4's can do that that the GF2 can't.

My friend said it did work fine at 800x600, when there weren't any enemies around.  But it got unacceptably slow for him when he got 3 enemies on screen at once.

He's a *very* technical guy so I don't doubt him, but even I can't figure out how performance could be *that* bad at 640x480...  Maybe his fps standards are higher than the rest of us?

I'm just trying to keep myself from buying a GF4, because I'll need a new computer and a 9700 anyways when Doom3 comes out. 8)

Quotelooks like Sunday is the choice of everyone.

I will be gone for the next 2 days on a business trip but should be back by Friday.

Discuss times that are agreeable.

May I suggest that one team member from each team directly contact their team-mates and put together the list of times on Sunday which that team could make it out, then post here, and we'll put a schedule together.

And we need to do this ASAP, like in the next 24 hours - Sunday is fast approaching.

Hope this doesn't end up being all too last minute, but what the hey, let's give it a go, if we don't do it now, who knows how long it'll be.

It's a game ...but it ain't got its own topic! / IL2
January 26, 2003, 01:27:46 PM
QuoteJust been on N42 and they have just made a server for it...

And last week someone from/on N42 was running an IL2 server!  And there's someone else posting a whole whack of WWII-Online pictures that look like fun.

Too much, much too much choice, can't decide....[/SIZE]

BTW: If any of you are early-birds, check the N42 CS server around 4-9am GMT on the weekends.  We've actually had some activity then!  No password anymore, but since CS itself in general is so dead, we only usually get one or two non-pcs players in an evening to indoctrinate.  (I still don't get home early enough to join you guys, will continue to try harder)

Hello everybody.

We're organizing an informal 4-on-4 tournament over at Network 42, and you're all invited.

http://www.xlii.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t...6895&highlight=

There are already a bunch of Europeans involved, so we'll have to do some of the matches on the weekends already anyways.

Cheers,
