It's another of these dratted American customs where you Araldite a baseball cap or dishcloth to your head at an unfortunate angle in order to look, er, "street".
Sir,
I am a Yorkshireman. Genteel to a degree which requires me to bathe on my birthday, and perhaps for weddings and funerals. It was February and if you'll excuse the colloquialism I was freezing my knackers off. The wind howls around the Minster, which I'd entered in order to climb the spiral staircase to the roof where I had no reason to expect better weather. Hence the warm and wooly hat.
Besides, according to local legend, a man may lose his life when venturing out lacking appropriate headgear.
