Technology Section / Does anyone still use watercooling?

My computer is quiet when running normally, but I often run world community grid and folding at home when at my PC and my stock fans get noisy.

I read watercooling doesn't really help from an efficiency's sake - but I could move the heat to a nice big radiator with some big slow fans on it.

I've seen all-in-one kits which are fairly accessible, but really want a nice custom build - problem is I can't find them cheaper than £300 all factored in.

Is that the right price bracket I should be looking at?

I've thought about using parts not specifically for watercooling rigs - like sourcing my own pipework and fans, but the real cost seems to be in the heat exchangers to the CPU and GFX card chips. I guess you're paying for the custom low-volume builds, right?

Any advice or pointers on where to go is appreciated!

Thanks everyone for an awesome LAN

Even though I had an embarassing mario kart semi-final performance by offing myself in the battle round, I've left with nothing but good spirits and a new found taste for Destiny 2

Personally speaking, I find the LANs a great place to disconnect for a bit. Something I find harder to do day-to-day. Here's to the next!

dMw LAN XXXVI / LAN XXXVI - Transport & Flight Details
October 07, 2019, 02:24:04 PM
I can pick up around 8am, but would need to drop off somewhere close to work, either Cambridge North station, Cambridge, or Ely - someone would need to get you the last bit on to March.

There's a train which takes 1h from STN to March, but that may be an issue with all the LAN gear?

Again, I can pick up worst case around 4pm, but that's a long time after.

I'm going to see if I can call in remotely for a part to get you there still

We have a supplier coming in on Friday all day now - the earliest I can be at Stansted will be around 4-4:30 :(

If you run out of options, I can get you then of course - but that's a long wait!

Hey Michelanio, I am looking at getting Friday off work - if it is agreed I'll come pick you up from Stansted.

Did you get transport sorted?

Dead Men Folding / F@H & World Community Grid
May 07, 2019, 10:04:18 AM
I was looking at finally trading in my association for Team Engadget for my world community grid contributions, is there a dMw group?

I did spot the F@H group though, and the WCG client doesn't exercise my Vega GPU so I'll look at getting this running as well.

In fact, if you're free why not join us for one of the meals Thursday or Friday mate?

Just got booked in Fri-Sun. I'll be over after work Friday for steak night and will drag myself back home Sunday.

Lifts are still available to lan'ners if needed, lei me know! There's room in the car for 4 plus rigs

I live local, so let me know if I can help with lifts from Ely, Cambridge, Cambridge North Station, Stansted Airport, or wider afield.

Hello, I'm New Here...... / Hi!
June 18, 2017, 07:17:05 PM
Hi everyone,

Thanks to Galatoni's introduction at the meet up in March (the place, not the month.. I think it was in April).. I signed up to the forum and have been mostly in the Telegram chat so far. I thought it's about time I get on to actually post in the forums!

So, my PC is is now 10 years old and no longer switches on. No idea about why, but even if i got it working, the 8800 GTX likely wouldn't cut it these days and i'm pretty sure it's dead. I'm looking at a shiny new PC based on a Ryzen 1700 after spec'ing one for a friend and it running very nicely. I'm undecided on a gfx card at the moment; I got 6 decent years out of the 8800 GTX before it was noticeably starting to show the strain, I'd like to put in a decent card again and pay for it now so it's good for another long while. I'm looking at if the AMD Vega series has any guts to it, if not I'll be back with another nVidia. I might stick with the 22" 1080p monitor I've had since 2007 as well and instead get a Vive after testing out Galatoni's - that thing was freaking awesome. In case you're interested, the PC will also be spec'd for other sciency stuff (first project is making a beer alcohol level detecting belt for my homebrewing) as well as driving a 3d printer. Orders welcome once it's arrived! All I'm waiting on is a pile of cash now.

Until that magical happy day, I'm making do with a surface book. The SB does a fairly decent job at running the games I have now at OKish rates. It's definitely not a gaming beast, but the GeForce 960/970ish m chipset actually out-performs my now probably dead 8800 GTX by a clear margin. It runs Elite and HellDivers at 30fps consistently.

As for games, it feels like I've come out of a long long gaming hibernation. I'm currently alternating between Helldivers and Elite Dangerous. Helldivers is a fun game for 30 mins to an hour at a time. It seems to be dropping in popularity at the moment though. Elite is fun but needs much more of my time, so I find myself not bothering as often. I have no idea about what other games I should pick up to play and I'm open to suggestions. There's an XCOM save I really should get round to finishing..

Hope I'll see you around the forums!
