The problem is that no anti-virus software in existance will stop a new, previously unknown virus from propagating and delivering it's payload. The reason is that if it's a new peice of code which is not stored in the DAT file tables of your AV software - it will not recognise it and will allow it straight through (hence why viruses still exist)
Heuristic scanning won't really help in it's current state - so if you hear a new Virus Alert, the best thing to do is disconnect yourself from the Internet, and go out / do something else for 2-3 hours. By the time you get back, the A.V. Doctors will probably have written and made available the DAT file updates.
Cheerio!
