Quote from: Ranualf;398895I decided to use my hard earned cash on a X55 Rhino, as a lot of reviews said that the x52 & pro had limitations on the thruster block set up.

I'm curious, what are the supposed limitations? I'm on an X52 Pro and i've not come across any issues. I ummed and aahed over the X55 but decided I preferred something that looked more 'space age' than 'modern day aircraft' :)

I still need to finish the Prison Break that I hosted, so I don't lose the 40k I put into it ;) Is anyone going to be about tonight? It's basically my only night at home on my PC at the moment due to new job and moving and such.

It also depends what your control system assist is set as. Default on consoles was to provide partial aim assist. Direction + target button to automatically lock to the chest of the next enemy in that direction. Then manual aiming from there if you wanted to get a headshot or whatever. They also had full aim assist (not sure how that worked differently), and total free aim. I seem to recall with the partial assist if you released the manual aim adjust button (for getting a headshot, hitting and arm or foot for a guy mostly behind cover etc) it would snap back to the chest. Or maybe that was the full aim assist difference.

Now on PC you'd expect most people to be using free aim (aim assist only works with gamepad anyway, and doesn't do anything in vehicles, only on foot), but the default is still partial aim assist. You get additional money/RP bonuses when on heists if you complete them with the controls set to free aim. Not sure about missions. But of course that benefits anyone who uses mouse and keyboard as it doesn't adversely affect them to set to free aim.

Now for the annoyance. Firstly, it's not a true per-user setting. Any time you try to join a job (mission, heist, whatever) that has a different aim setting to your own, it'll warn you and ask you if you want to drop back out to freemode or auto-change your setup to match the host and continue joining. In freemode you only get matched with other people using the same assist setting as you. This means a) you can't change your aim system in multiplayer; you have to drop back to single player, change it, then load back into multiplayer (which would still be an annoyance but not as much of one if it didn't take so long to load anything in this game), and b) if you set your control system to anything other than the default it can be hard to find instances full of other people to play with (this was a complaint also made about free aim on consoles. Some people wanted to play using it, to require more skill for the combat, but were finding that they were in very sparsely populated freemode instances only shortly after release because the majority just left it on default settings). The default is also 'infectious'. Unless you have a community of people who a) all set their aim system to free aim, and b) all never play *any* jobs or heists with anyone apart from each other, you'll keep finding yourself reset to default. All it takes is for one person to do a single mission hosted by a random who has their setting on default, then for that person to host a mission with 5 other guys from the community without changing their setting back to free, and bam, 6 guys in the community dumped back to the default setting. And unless *they* all drop to single player and change it back then they go on to host missions for other community members and it spreads further.

I've probably ranted far too much about this now...

Pff. Gamepad is superior for vehicle control, IMO. I have mouse + keyboard for on foot, switch to gamepad for vehicles, and switch back to mouse + keyboard when i'm driving a car and want to shoot ;) (other vehicles you generally aim the vehicle, not your arm while driving, so gamepad is still better I think).

Elite: Dangerous / Current ED bugs
May 01, 2015, 03:27:23 PM
I've had a workaround for the assassination missions for a while now. Thought everyone knew it, sorry. I got it from the ED official forums, so I assume Frontier are aware:

* The bug preventing you from finding your assassination target only occurs when you get the 'alternative target' contact before you get the 'target last spotted in X' contact. If this happens, it prevents you from ever finding the original contact, you can only find the alternative.
* Your mission only gets updated with the alternative target if the person giving the updated info finishes their 3 'send' spiel.
* Shooting a target causes them to stop talking to you.
* You can tell whether a contact is going to give you the 'alternative target' or 'target last spotted in X' spiel from the contents of their first communication to you.

Thus I drop into any USS when hunting for an assassination target and immediately deploy hardpoints, target any contact in the area and come round to bear on them. If they start with a spiel about an alternative contact (for example "So you're the guy X sent to take down Y"), I shoot them a single time. This stops them from completing the spiel. I might also get a minor (200 Cr or so) fine for attacking a neutral target, but big whoop. I just go and pay it off at the nearest station when i'm done in the system (i.e. when i've got the communication I want). They might also start trying to attack me, but they don't manage to do any real damage before I re-enter supercruise. Rinse and repeat until you get a spiel about the original target's last known location ("Whew, I only just got away with my life", or whatever) as the first communication, at which point you listen to the whole spiel, get the required system, jump to there and continue hunting for the target.

I have been told that once you have been given the single system the target was last seen in by a contact in the Galaxy it doesn't matter if you then also get an alternative target, you will still be able to find the original. I can't confirm or deny this, as my instincts have got so twitchy that I shoot as soon as I see the first 'alternative target' type communication from a contact, no matter what point in the mission I am at.

I've been using this system for quite some time now, and I've never failed to find my assassination target. Sometimes it only takes me 5 minutes, sometimes it takes half an hour (due to lack of USSes showing up in the target systems, or having the 'alternative target' contact 3 or 4 times and having to shoot them every time, or whatever), but i've never failed to find my target where before I was sometimes taking upwards of 2 hours searching after having my mission updated with an alternative target, and never finding the original. I generally collect 3-5 assassination missions in the same general area, with an overlap of the systems I have to search within, and then go hunting for them all at once in the systems that they overlap in.

Also, I have discovered that assassination contacts who are 'General somebody' (often 'General Gen. somebody', which is a bug in itself) are a) In Federal Dropships not Anacondas (Which is odd when they're not Federation allied...), and b) Not named when you target them or they talk to you. I once spent over an hour searching for a specific target of this type, and was getting very frustrated that it seemed like every USS I dropped into contained a green (allied) Federal Dropship, who was listed as 'System Authority' but attacked me on sight even though I was not wanted/bountied. Eventually I attacked and destroyed it in my frustration, only to get a 'Mission Updated' notification saying to go and collect my reward. I've since done a good number of the 'Kill General X' assassination missions, and they've all been like this.

That sounds like it's specifically for the preload from before the game was released, when the files could be on your PC but were encrypted. Not for just downloading the game now it's already out.

GTA V / GTA V Crew organisation
May 01, 2015, 10:54:47 AM
Well, this is what each level of crew gets you (each higher level also has permissions from all lower levels, of course):

Muscle -

  • Write on crew wall in the social club
Representative -

  • Invite new crew members
  • Publish emblems (Crew logos, a crew can have multiple emblems, but only one is currently 'active'. People can pay to have the crew emblem on their car etc, so if the emblem is then changed here what is on their car would change in-game)
Lieutenant -

  • Demote Representative to Muscle
  • Delete wall posts and emblems made my other crew members
  • View the crew settings page (But not edit any of it)
Commissioner -

  • Kick members
  • Promote/Demote members between the lower ranks
  • Edit crew settings (motto, colour, rank titles, type etc. Once a crew name and 4 letter code has been set they cannot be edited)
  • Post in-game messages (does anyone know how to actually *do* this? I had a look for a different crew I lead, but couldn't find anything...)
  • Set the crew status on the social club page
Crew Leader -

  • Promote/Demote Commissioners

I'd hope we'd trust all known members of dMw to invite new members sensibly, so anyone on the forums should probably be a Representative. Then they would need to grab a Commissioner to promote anyone they invited to Representative if necessary. And Representatives can play around with new logos for the group should they so wish, and see what people think. Most of the other permissions are not things I see us really needing much of in this community. The only thing i'd say is - admins as Commissioners is good, but only if they play regularly. We're fine at the moment, as it's a new game so a lot of people are on it regularly, but we should make sure there is always at least 1 person at Commissioner level who is a regular player for as long as this is a game we want to play as a group :)

I spent ages repping up in Ethgreze to get access to the Alliance core world, but sadly there wasn't much worthwhile there when I got it :-/

GTA V / Looking for missions
April 30, 2015, 11:09:37 AM
For people who are new to GTA Online, here's how contact missions work:

* Each mission has a minimum level requirement to be offered the job.
* Regardless of the minimum requirement, if another player starts a mission and invites you to it you are able to join and take part. Minimum requirements have *some* indication as to the difficulty level, in that bad guys will often be more numerous, have better guns, have more body armour etc at higher levels, but it's not always the case.
* Once you reach the required level yourself there is a possibility that the NPC who gives that specific mission will phone or text you with the mission details, and you can accept to host it and invite other players should you wish.
* Missions that you have previously 'completed' (i.e. taken part in to the end rather than dropped out in the middle of, but it doesn't actually matter if you have succeeded or failed) when you were over the minimum level show up under the Pause > Online > Jobs > Play Job > Rockstar Created Jobs > Missions menu, and can be chosen from there to do a specific mission that you want at any time in the future.
* When you host a job, the game defaults to 'Open'. This means that any random player who requests to do a random job of that type (e.g. Deathmatch, Contact Mission, Survival etc) can get dumped into your job. To change the default to 'Closed' (invite only, so you can invite dMwers or other friends without the job filling with randoms) for every game you start, go to Pause > Online > Settings > Matchmaking. You can still then change a specific job to open via the job start menu if you need/want more players.

The problem is that, if you level up too fast and/or level up by doing a lot of missions that higher level friends invite you on, you can miss the initial text/call from an NPC offering you a specific mission. If you go too far, they end up only offering you the higher level missions, no matter how much you call them up and request a job. As such, i'm missing a few of the lower level missions from my list, and i'm looking to get them added. I got a ton added the other night when I came across a random level 300-odd player who had every mission in the game, but he got bored and logged off before I had a chance to get them all.

The full list of all missions can be found here: http://gta.wikia.com/Missions_in_GTA_Online

If anyone has the following in their missions list, I would really appreciate meeting up online sometime and you hosting the mission so I can get them added to my list. I'm happy to go with people on any specific missions they want as well. I need (alphabetically, as that's how they appear in the Jobs menu):

A Boat in the Bay (Ron), level 40
Artificial Scarcity (Martin), level 19
ATV Steal (Simeon), level 25
Caught Napping (Lamar), level 20
Cops Capacity (Lester), level 19
Pickup Sticks (Martin), level 21

Elite: Dangerous / Faction Preference Poll

I'm certainly Alliance. I disagree with the slavery in the Empire, and the serious corporations-in-charge attitude of the Federation. The Alliance have got some ethically dubious members too, but I stay away from them and try to stick to the democratic systems. I fought on the side of the rebels in the Lugh conflict, just to stick up for the folks trying to stick it to the Federation.

I do agree that the Alliance has basically no useful rewards at current though. I'm really hoping that changes soon. Even if they don't get a specific ship (wouldn't necessarily make sense with such a diverse set of allied worlds rather than a single core government) i'm hoping for bonuses to trades or custom paintjobs or whatever. I've actually done enough bounty hunting for the Alliance and taken down enough wanted criminals that even the Federation consider me allied (though I am still a Cadet, so couldn't get the dropship even if I had the cash), so maybe I should try and find some Alliance worlds near to empire space to do the same there.

Were they green/friendly to you? I've been bounty hunting a few times and my wanted target has been with a faction that I have done enough to be allied with, so they don't attack me until after i've scanned them and shot first.
