I have 2 x 250gb Samsung IDE Hard Drives (1 has 2 partitions and the other 3)
And i have each of them in a external case ( they take power from the main's), now each is connected to my shuttle pc through my pci usb card.

The problem is i try to access something from one of them, say a movie after a certain amount of time my pc freezes and it seems the power is gone from the extenal hard drive cases, so i have to reset my pc and it seems to work again until i try to access them for more than a few minutes, i tried to do scan disk on them but it just freezes.

Im not sure if it is the hard drives, the cases, the power. Any1 had simular problems or can just provide a helpful word.

Thanks

Faulty USB?  I've seen some wierd shiznit resulting from a (gradually or intermittently) failing USB........

Check in Device Manager under USB devices. Visit each USB "hub" (they are called root hubs usually) in turn and right click and select properties. Then go to the "power management" tab and check that the "allow this computer to turn of this device to save power" box is NOT ticked (it's usually the upper tickbox of the two)

Hmm it does the same.... But this time there is still power going to the device, do you think the usb pci card may be faulty?

Try removing the card physically and reinserting it (ensuring that it goes in firmly). Doing this will remove anything that has built up on the socket and card contacts (you are, effectively, scraping it clean)

If that doesn't work then it may be the card or it could be the USB stack (driver). Check you have latest drivers for USB - if you are going to update them unplug all USB devices apart from mice/keyboard before you do it.
