Lag, Stuttering

Call it what you will, but I've been plagued with this for a while now.  It manifests itself as BF2 slowing down to a 15fps slideshow at times, a bit like what used to happen in CS if there were a few too many smoke grenades and a firefight at a choke point.  In short, I'm finding BF2 to become unplayable in Multiplayer - and it's happening a lot. :(  Seems to be fine in Singleplayer though...  :eyebrow:

The problem is, I can't isolate the source of the problem.  Thinking back, too many things occured at roughly the same time that could be causing it.  Namely:

1) my recent PC death, and subsequent repair.
2) the release of patch 1.21 (and now 1.22)
3) reported issues with traffic shaping affecting gaming at my ISP, PlusNet.  However, these have been ongoing for a while and I didn't appear to be affected before.

The only thing I can affect at the moment is the state of the PC.  My gaming hardware:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (running at 200MHz fsb on an Abit NF7-S v2.0)
2x 1GB Corsair XMS (2-3-3-6)
Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample (GT factory clocked to 6800 Ultra speeds)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

All drivers are up to date.  I have reinstalled BF2 from scratch, and patched right up to 1.22.  I have played with lowering the graphics settings right down (and deleting the cache), but that doesn't seem to help any.

Has anybody else had issues since the release of patch 1.21, or have any further (sensible :winkiss:) ideas for me to try?

I haven't played BF2 for a while but you could check if everything is sorted and fitted properly (RAM and so).
Also after the patch sometimes the connection set itself back to LAN and not internetconnection.
I'll see what else I can think off. Otherwise I suggest the helppart in the BF2forum and especially the link from Doorman.

Cadaver, I had this problem and solved it by following the solution take from OBC forum:

After you apply the 1.2 patch do this, some people experience lag, even though there pings are good. Its a corruption of you game files after patching.

It is your game, now the easy fix is to go to 2 folders:

My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\xpack\cache

In these folders there will be 1 or more folders, delete all these folders under cache. The folders will look like this:

{D7B71E2-0208-11-976E-8C00A1C2CB35}_2554_2

Now restart your game, you will optimize shaders again, and the lag should be gone.

Unfortunately he said he already deleted the cache :(

Maybe PlusNet are having issues? I got a mail from Force9 a few days ago apologising for major issues they had where one of their primary peers (I believe it was one that had only recently set up) had a major failure, and stopped peering. Downloads and such are still fine for me, but anything time dependant has gone all to hell. It has got to the point where sometimes even WoW lags enough for me to die due to it.

I'm so changing ISP when we move house in July...

Thanks all. Some good suggestions.  I'm really hoping it's not the ISP, but have had my suspicions.  :g:

Ron - that's a great link! Will definitely be trying those tweaks out. Have a gold star old boy! ;)

Thanks for starting this Cadaver. I too have had the same experiences since patching to 1.21.

Tried defragging? Delete cahce, fire up BF2 with desired graphics settings, wait for map to load, quit, defrag relevant partitions/drives where BF2 and the cache files reside. I solved the same stuttering problems by lowering my graphics settings initially, and later by updating the motherboard Gart/AGP drivers. The motherboard drivers made a world of difference (HL2 was largely unaffected, but BF2 benefitted massively) I'd hazard a guess that your system can cope with the graphics, but try lowering one or two of the settings - usually the stuttering hit me in certain very specific areas. The bridge map was very good at bringing on the stutter. I hear that audio and creative drivers can also cause issues... gl :)

I had exactly the same fault.  The game played 100% in single player so I rules out the PC.  I was getting online freezing and was unable to fire.

My pings were ok........turns out is was my daughter DOWNLOADING lots.

My problem was throughput or lack of it.  If your using a wireless router is someone nabbing ya bandwidth.
