perspex / acrylic sheeting

don't suppose any of you guys know a good supplier of perspex sheets? they type people might use for building custom pc cases etc? Or any idea how easy it is to work with in terms of screws/drilling/etc?

probable size of sheets (2 of at least) required is about 50cm square.

most hardware stores will stock this. you will have more luck with smaller local hardware shops and builders merchants than with places like homebase and B&Q. I had to hunt around for ages for my stuf to put windows in my big green case!

with drilling it I would reccomend either a hand drill or an electric drill on VERY low ratio so it is turning very slowly, this stuff either cracks or melts if you go to fast, as for cutting it the best method I have found is a gradual score through with a sharp stanly knife, it takes a while but gives the best results, for screwing you will need to drill 1st and then use a washer over the hole with the screw to support the weight over a larger area

Thanks for the advice. I thought I might be able to buy it online and possible even get it pre-cut (though costs may limit that plan depending on their pre-cut charges)


I've got a speaker cabinet that at the moment is entirely made out of wood. I am considering replacing the two sides (at least, maybe more) with clear acrylic (so it'd be the thick stuff...) and mounting an amplifier within the thing. Essentially it's to make the unit more aesthetically pleasing...

It also depends on the kind of drill you use.
My oldest bro King makes signs and stuff from this material. Probably da_Ricci can gives you the type of drills that would be suitable for it as he sells buildingmaterials and so.

I have a cordless 14v drill and an ancient rusty mains drill and a reasonable assortment of small masonry, HSS, and some other kind of bits with pointy bits sticking out the ends...not entirely sure what they're for

Think I can rely on the screws forming their own threads within the drilled holes or would I need to think about threaded holes? :S

you will definatlly need to pre drill holes in the perspex for screws, there is no need for them to have a thred in the perspex.

it isn't really very fragile, only when you cut/drill/work on it, this is just normal easily available grade i don't know about other grades/types of it

And drilling into the sides to affix screws there is okay as well? i.e. into the sides of the sheet rather than through it? ...think I may have to get some chunky perspex!! ... or re-jig the way the box fits together... or find some nomorenails that sets clear  :whistle:

if you are just looking to fix it around the egde then a silicone sealent may well do, also you can get ths in clear very easily
