Completely (mostly) pointless newbie question

So ... I'm thinking I can't hold off buying this much longer. However, Apart from a couple of hours' fruitless Guild Wars I have zero MMO experience.

How does the game fare internationally? I.E. would I in the US have a hard time finding you chaps in the UK/Europe? Would it be largely pointless trying to play with you lot til I'd levelled up a whole bunch?

And to save me posting some other topic when/if I get it, what mods would y'all recommend, and would I have any performance worries on a 2.4GHz P4 w/ 512Mb RAM and a 9800pro?

edit: oh, I'd probably be sharing it with a housemate - can you have multiple characters in WoW like in GW?

When I started playing WoW on the 5th or March last year, I had never played neither a RPG or a MMO, and since I'm still playing (and doing quite good if I might add ;)), I wouldn't see the lack of experience as any problem at all.  Getting started with WoW is very intuitive - there are good help and guidance systems all from the beginning.

To be able to play on the European servers, you must buy an European version of the game - but playing it from overseas shouldn't be much of a problem.  It's just a small fix in a config file to state which servers you'll connect to.

Shouldn't really be a problem.  There are always new people joining, and old people create new characters, so you'll always have people to play with.  I'd say it's rather a benefit for you, cause you'll have lots of people to ask for questions and guidance :)

I started playing WoW on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with 2.0 GHz P4, 512MB RAM and 64 MB GeForce 440 go - I ofc couldn't run with the highest graphical settings, but I managed just fine.

its 10 per server, and if your from US you can only play US, you could play euro if you found some1 to send you over a copy from here, but servers might be dead abit at your play time, and main raids take a whole evening from 7 to 12, so if you intrested in ever doing that from US on euro server there is a major time zone issue. Also game is very adictive, so sharing doesnt really work :D

Dont worry that you have got any experience with MMO's, WoW was created so that it would be easy for newcomers to this genre.

As for buying the EU one, well as Bastet says, you get a problem when you try to do raids, which you will once your 60. ;)

I got the same GFX card as you did and as much RAM till a week ago. You'll find Ironforge (aka Lagforge) a hell because it will decrease your peformance. But as much from the rest, as grinding and doing instances its fine. Just make sure you dont use too much mods, as I do got 92 atm , because it will decrease your peformance alot.

Ow yeah, Welcome to your new life! :P

Neff

You'll be fine ;) But if your playing from US , its just like Bastet said, you'd prob be asleep during the raiding times of most EU guilds. And when you hit 60 theres "just" that to do :b

The US isnt asleep at raiding times. the only problem may be getting in from work erly enough to start the raid!

And dont worry about beeing a newbie, I had never pld anything like it b4 and I started about 6 weeks ago! Im loving it and the only problem is that its to addictive.

Actually, you can, there was a discussion about this when TL wanted to know about it when he was going to the US and i've played on the US realms from here on a trial account, and also on a friends account in the US, like Bob said, its just a simple change in config (like, changing us to eu).

Also, I didnt have any MMO or RPG experience and I got on pretty okish so im sure you'll get on great  8)

All righty, thanks guys.

New question: one of my slots in my weapony area (not 100% on the terminology, sorry, the bit with numbers 1-10) is green around the edges, while the others are white, and I can't use it. It's my bow, and up til about an hour before I quit last night it was working just fine, then it disappeared from my actions list and when I put it back there from my inventory it ceased to work. What's all that about?

(not sure if the green outline means much though... could I have failed to equip arrows somehow? I have around 200 in my quiver, it says.)

(augh, dangit, servers down  for maintenance)

Sebas

Well the green outline means whats its rarity is:

Grey = crap, sell it to a NPC
White = tradeskill items (copper, linen etc) some are valuable, but most armor and weapons that are white are worthless
Green = Uncommon, which will be the colour that most of your armor will be. Tradeskill items that are green are mostly quite valuable.
Blue = Rare, these are superior weapons/armor and are often Bind on Pickup (BoP) which you cant sell. However some are Bind on Equip (BoE) and these sell for some nice cash. Only very valuable tradeskill items are these colour.
Purple = Epix! This colour you will rarely see below level 60. Almost all are BoP but the ones who are BoE are worth alot of $$!
Orange = Legendary, three items have these colour, which are all melee items  :ranting:
Red = Artifact, only game masters (GM's) have this, but they are hackx

And for the bow problem, are your arrows in the right slot? In the small slot  right of your bow?

This is just what I think might be the problem, not shure though:

You can add different icons to your action bar (what you call weapony area ;)): in short that is (usable) items (such as weapons, potions and bandages) and skills (such as spells and the ability to use for instance a bow). Items you find in your bags, and skills you find in your spellbook (press 'P' to open that one).

What I think you have done, is that the second time you added your bow to your action bar (the first time it probably was there by default), you took the actuall bow from your inventory, when what you really want to do is to take the "shoot-with-bow-skill" from your spellbook (not quite sure what the real name is, it might be the skill "Attack" that goes for all weapons).  If you added the bow item to your action bar (which I can see as the only possible explanation), when you click it all that happens is that you will equip that spesific item, and if it's already equiped, nothing happens.

So what you want to do, is to open your spellbook and find the "Attack spell" and drag that onto your actionbar.  Pushing that will than fire/attack with whatever weapon you've currently got equipped :)

Can't check with the servers down, but that sounds highly likely. Thanks Threbrilith :)
