Jeff's got my vote especially on hearing the X-Factor version which does the song no justice at all. :)

I think Buckleys Version is currently at 37

Buckleys version is by FAR the best there is.

Thulsa Doom

Maybe so, but the marketing machines will ensure the X-Factor one gets to No:1.
I like the latest version, also previous versions.  It's a great song and if someone with a good voice sings it well, what's not to like?

I generally don't think re-doing old songs is a shame or blasphemy. I don't think actually liking those cover-versions is a shame either.:taz:

But music is connected to feelings, the Originals has been around for longer, so people probably have some feelings connected to that one - much more than the new version at least.

Seeing I have a lot of wonderful memories connected to the Jeff Buckley version, its the one I like the best....and ironically thats a cover as well :D
(Leonard Cohen did the original, in case you didn't know)

Concerning the hitlist thing: its a pop-phenomena, X-factor and heavily promoted shows/bands, so *now* it will be ranked higher on the hit list, but on a longer period, lets say a "best of 20th century" Jeff Buckleys version would probably rank higher ^^

I don't mind cover versions. However this one is plain rubbish. I have heard people in pubs sing it better. Rather than emotional singing she seems to breathe out loads while singing, which makes her sound like a deflating balloon. They played Kermits version on Radio 1 earlier...I have to say I prefered that too.

However there is little that can be done to stop it reaching number one. Almost everyone one who spent money phoning in to vote her to win will buy the single, and that's 8 million people, plus random people last minute gift shopping.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks its awful. The original is the best and I'm not that keen on that to be honest!!

There is nothing wrong with doing covers. However, it is then a matter of adding or interpreting the song, making your own original and interesting contribution to it. And tbh, Jeff took Cohen's version and added so much, which Cohen has also acknowledged more than once, that making a decent cover is almost impossible. Hence, Jeff's version resurfaces as well.

Why not take one of the other wonderful songs from Buckley's album, and make a cover? So much potential there!

She has a nice voice, for sure.  I just think this song doesn't sound right with a female vocalist.
