I got a question from my dad, cause he is getting that "somebody is logged on to your computer, will you still shut down?" message every time he turns of his computer (has been since he moved to a new place, and he is sharing internet connection with his landlord). My first thought was that he perhaps (most likely, if I know him right ) haven't set his admin password, and thus would be vulnerable for those default windows shares (C$ etc).

Now I haven't used XP home edition myself for as long as I can remember (I'm a pro user, you know :flirty:), and there are some minor differences there that I just can't quite remember. The normal Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>System Tools>Local Users and Groups don't work, since XP home doesn't have Local Users and Groups (at least my dad said he couldn't see it (and the user account he is on is member of the administrator group)). So where do one go to set the admin pwd in XP home?

Also, under his System Tools>Shared Folders>Shares, he said he couldn't see any C$ - is that just hidden under XP home, or are it actually not there?

The $ in C$ makes it a "hidden" share

If he knows the name of his PC he can run the following command:

\\machinename\c$

Which effectively a shortcut to the admin account for the c drive and gives you access to it.

Alternatively type:

net share

in a command window and you should see a list of shares on the machine (including c$)
