From a recent Blue it looks like Blizz intend to make some changes to help people when browsing AH to find the gems they need to fit the various different colour sockets.  It is hoped to be in a (near) future patch.  Original Blue here.

Nice :D I have to search Thott everytime I want to find a gem, because I don't know the different ones and such :rolleyes:

Great news, i personally always use wowhead.com when searching for gems since they sort after socket type. But they sort it red, blue, yellow, orange, purple and green.
