Can you try starting CS from the games menu (rather than joining a server) and then create a local server and see if you can join it?

Getting the same problem there as well. So cant even play on my own server.

OK at least we now know there is not a prob with your internet connection

If you feel comfortable try uninstalling your firewall TEMPORARILY just to check it is not the problem. Don't go online for more than 5 mins so bootup with network cable unplugged.

I dont think it's my copy of cs. Another thing that I remembered last night was that during installing halflife2, at no point was I asked to type in my unique code that came with the game, you know the one something like ..... erterg-gerggg-tjfghgf-dfgeger-sfhdfhdg

Well, I can't quite say what the problem was because I fitted a newish hard drive and reinstalled windows. And hey presto.
