Got home last night to find my socket ring main dead, and the MCB tripped. Powered the house back up to find that the PC then wouldn't fire up. After poking around with a multimeter it looks like the PSU has croaked.

It was an Antec Truepower 480 jobby, around 3 years old. On pulling it from the case, there's nothing visibly wrong with it, no fiery black streaks, etc. Except it won't supply the +5VSB standby voltage (purple wire) on the motherboard connector at rest, or spring in to life when you ground the PS_ON line (connect green wire to one of the blacks).

I haven't really been keeping abreast of PC upgrade kit of late, so can someone suggest a suitable replacement PSU for me? Something around the 500W (or greater) mark that'll run an Athlon XP 3200+, 2GB DDR400 RAM, 6800GT, a couple of hard drives, and a DVD burner comfortably. Good rail stability under load, dual fans, and quiet operation are a must.  I don't care one jot about flashy LEDs, and the like.

I'm on a course today, so have limited internet access, otherwise I'd research this myself. I'd like to get something ordered today, for delivery Monday. And obviously this means I can't make tonight on the 'hook.

Might I suggest:

£48 from scan. 580w which should do you for your next upgrade

I have a Hiper PSU in my old rig that's been running brilliantly for the last year or so.

Never had a Hiper, but my personal favourites are the Enermax PSUs.  Pick one to suit your wattage requirements.

I'm loving my Galaxy 1000 at the moment. Tis true Enermax are a solid brand.. Depends on price limitations.

Atm i can recommend Hiper, Enermax and Corsair.. Ive just bought a Corsair 620 watt which is rock stable.. tested hiper 530w ( my media center PSU) and my corsair 620w (main pc) on my testbench, how far i could make it go before they shut down.. the hiper reached 567 load watts before it said good night, my Corsair reached 709watt before it didnt wanna go higher :)
but thats also a bit much to do to them :)

The corsair had slightly less ripple on the lines then the hiper... but nothing that would do anything.. both are grade A PSU's imo

never tried it on a enermax so far tho.. eventho i would love to torture one a bit..
TL can i borrow your PSU a bit :woot2::woot2:

As a brand, Hiper are pretty damn good.  The first PSU I've ever had with a manual.:thumb:

Running a subtle blue Type-R 580 here, no hassles and good value. Corsair/Seasonic are the other names too look at. Modular cabling lends itself to a tidy install too.

Modular PSU's are the future for me... tho the round hiper ones im not to fond of, but hey thats just my taste :)

I've been very happy with my Antec Truepower, i've gotta admit. My old machine had one in, and it kept on trucking when power blips caused every other electronic device in the house to bounce. I can't actually recall what kind of PSU I put in the new machine. Er...

Thanks for all the suggestions lads.  Top work. :thumbsup2:

As it happens, the original PSU had a three-year warranty on it that still had two months left to run.  I also remembered I had an old 350W Chieftec unit (which came with my case) up in the loft, that I could use to tide me over.  So a new PSU purchase wasn't quite the priority I first thought.

I managed to get the defunct PSU RMA'd back to Antec in Rotterdam, and received a brand new TruePower Trio 550 as a replacement today.

It's all installed and running nicely as I type this. :)

always nice when the device dies a few weeks before the warranty deadline rather than after it! :D
