I got an email from my godfather earlier today. He is in the air ambulance service, and he was forwarding me something he got through his work - it translates something like this into English:

QuoteThink about those that care for you, and enter ICE contacts on your cell phone now!

Paramedics often find that most people they come over in accidents have a cell phone on them, but they don't know who the closest relatives are. It would be a good idea to have a common name which one can look for in these cases.

The suggestion is that everyone adds a person in their contact list with the name "ICE" (In Case of Emergency). Under this name you'll find contact information for who to contact (use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. for more than one name).

This is an easy thing to do, and it can make a big difference when it comes to an emergency.

Add and ICE contact to your phone book right away, and forward this mail to as many people you can, so that the "ICE" name can me made and used by as many as possible.

Good luck!
I though this sounded like quite a good idea. It's the first time I've heard about it here in Norway (and btw, I didn't translate the actual "ICE" name - it came like that in my mail (for international purpose I guess)) - don't know if you've heard about it before in Britain or other countries?

But I thought it was worth sharing the idea at least :)

After looking a bit more into it, this is obviously something that has been around for a couple of years - it even has it's own wikipedia page...

Yup, been here a while. It appears to have an awakening in Norway, I've received that info from a couple of friends from Norway the last month or so.

Dr Sadako

I have been using it for 2 years now. It is an excellent idea.

I'm sure the BBC ran the ICE thing some time ago. I'd have thought it was better to put people in the contacts directory as ICE - mum, ICE - someone's name. It's confusing if the phone rings and the call is from ICE1 etc...

I'd have though that for family they could look for "mum" "dad" and suchlike anyway... :)

I'd rather the paramedics were getting on with the job of saving my life, not dicking about with my phone.

Yep i saw something about it in danish television some time ago, danish paramedics said people shouldnt bother as it was illegal for them to read stuff on your phone anyways... And their main prio was to save your life not chatting with your relatives

in some cases medics need permission from your parent/guardian to do certain things

so ide guess, looking on your phone would be allowed at that stage
