DIY disaster - Gun Case

OK you DIY'ers

I'm have a complete Scarborough Fair trying to fix my gun case in the attic. It has to be bolted to a flank wall which in this case is Breeze Block.

I have the bolts and screw the rawl bolts in from the inside but when they tighten they're coming out of the drilled hole and splaying (make sense?). i.e. they're just enlarging the hole.

I'm thinking may have to batten wood or something first. Anyone got any sensible ideas?

Got the Police chappy coming on Wednesday so it has to be done by then else I get into big doo-doo for having a couple of shotguns lying around unprotected (or I need to transfer t hem again to someone else).

sounds like thermalite block to me. That's the stuff that looks/feels like that flower arranging oasis sponge.

You'll probably need something like this


Or you could use these in a large size with coach screws and penny washers

The absolute best and easiest things to use are called MultiMonti fittings. They used them to build the new Reichstag building amongst other things. You drill a hole and screw them in. I get mine from Screwfix Direct. Order tonight you'll get them wednesday.

The anchor bolts are the ones I'm struggling with.

The traditional bolt and wall plug is hard as it's hard to hold the case, drill a hole and fit the rawl plug from the inside - the case is very heavy and hard to line up which is why I need to hold the case in situ and drill and bolt rather than pre-drill the holes and then try to align the case to them.

I hadn't really thought about bolts which don't need plugs so that may well be the best way to go. Didn't even know you could get self-tapping? bolts.

I've got a shotgun myself and it's not even got to be that secure, it's just a percaution to stop you walking off with someone gun cabinet with their gun in it.  But the top part that blunt listed should work, we've put a hammock up using two of those in a solid brick wall. Easily holds a persons weight so should pass the test with the office they send round.
Procedure: line drill up with holes, drill target holes, move case out, redrill holes the right size and then put the bolts in. Should work fine.
Using expanding bolts there should be no way of them coming back out. Though they tend to be £5 a pair.

Firearms Office turns up - has a coffee. Talks to your missus to see if she thinks you're a nutter. Talks to you to see if he thinks you're a nutter. Visit Gun Case. Tut and make polite comments about the state of your attic. Place Foot against wall adjacent to gun case and place hands on either side. Jerk and Pull with all his might to try and dislodge it. Passes over your renewed Gun Certificate.

The anchor bolts weren't surviving the yanking and pulling - I'm blaming the substrate so I don't lose man points on crap DIY'ing :blink:

Seriously though - the issue is with the aerated breeze blocks. I've now battened the wall to ensure it's all straight am going to the local BM today to get those bolts as per above.

or just use some "silicone glue"? (eh, the one we sell is named strong hold, from polycell)
 
or just use speedplugs (i think its the same stuff BB is talking about)
