Anyone know if you get points by playing the single players scenarios or is it only when playing multiplayer online?

Only multiplayer. In singleplayer you can get "intel" points by picking up enemy laptops placed on the different levels. Press your "use" button to grab them.

Singleplayer is a good way to learn the different weapons and buttons.

I think a really good way if you just want to level up some of the weapons (red dot sight, silencer, etc) is to go on a public free-for-all server.  Yes they are total carnage, but within a game or two you'll have unlocked the basics and can start working on the fancier upgrades.

This means you'll be less worried about frags when you play with dMw and can truly enjoy the tactical bits
