im looking for a complete "box"

i have no idea whats good and whats not, or what goes with what anymore!

I want something thats going to last for 18+ months really.

Im not really fussed about being able to run everything in max settings just being able to be a reliable computer thats going to run everything that it needs to for the forseable future.

Im looking for maybe in the range of £300-£450 depending on how long its going to last.

I could do with the OS included in that so i know it tightens the budget some what as my old copy of xp could do with being replaced

any help is apreciated

T-Bag

Quad core, 4870, 2-4GB of DDR 2 ram. Faster the processor the longer it will last (but the more it will cost)
Juggling Hard Disks over concrete floors ends in tears 5% of the time.

Mine is a dual core 8400, 4850 GFX (of Gigabyte) and 2GB; bought 2-3 months ago.
Runs STALKER and FC2 easily.
I reckon it will easily last a year. Can't guarantee 18 months :-)

The need for 4870 depends mostly on the screen ur using. For my 17" ASUS (size of a 19"), there was no use buying the 4870.

Penfold

If you can stand the derision of your peers at the LAN then you could do worse than buy an off-the-shelf Dell. Can't say I've ever had any problems with mine and unless you're going to build your own then they give you more bang for the buck than anything else imho.

For example

PROCESSOR:   Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7300 processor (2.66GHz, 1066MHz, 3MB cache)edit
OPERATING SYSTEM:   Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 - English
HARDWARE SUPPORT:    1 Year Limited Warranty -  Collect & Return
MEMORY:   2048MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
HARD DRIVE:   320GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive
G
RAPHICS CARD:   512MB nVidia GeForce 9800GT graphics card
OPTICAL DRIVEDVD+/-RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)
KEYBOARDDell Multimedia USB Keyboard Black - UK/Irish
MOUSEDell 2 Button USB Scroll Optical Mouse - Black

Comes in at £460.

OK so you could up the ram if you wanted and go for dual core but it's not bad for the price.

Mr Sheep
As I recall you live fairly close to me, I'll build and configure any system you want to buy for the princely sum of 1 pint.  You'll just need to come to March to pick it up.

I would go with the old xp and save the money from buying vista to get better hardware, and thats like 100-200e. And wait for Windows 7.

Really? I'd heard good things although I do like hearing horror stories about companies so what did they do?

They used to have their support forums over on hexus.net but that disappeared a few months ago. The reading was particularly scary.

I actually remember that section, often referred to as the YGP section :) (YouGotPwned)

As the guys said.... It is just one list of horror stories from customer services that hang up after telling you to stick it where the sun don't shine to getting old equipment to replace RMA stuff.  The hexus forums must have been used by a lot of other system builders to sell their systems.
