What kind of router (100 Mbit) and firewall would you suggest to use for the basic home user (that is me). Need to work with a mixed PC and MAC environment.

4+ ports would be nice.

Any suggestions?

pricey but fantastic firewalls. very easy to use too. we have two here at work. as for router, any switch with the relevant number of ports would be fine. I take it you already have your internet access device (cable/adsl modem)

I got one of these:

for around £35.  I imagine here are better deals available now..

So it is software based and is run on my local comp or rather each comp that is running and connected to the switch?

I got a D-link 8 port 10/100 switch.

Yes. The reason for me asking is that our current router only supports 10 Mbit and in two weeks the installing of our new internet connection is under way. Wouldn't like to cut off 26 Mbit with a 10 Mbit router ...

the sonicwall is a hardware firewall.

it's configured via a standard web browser.

As for your router, you'll be best asking your ISP for a list of recommendations then post them here.
