I hav a Dell 3007WFC-HC monitor and it is not being recognised by a new Win 7 installation.  I have the relevant drivers from Dell for the monitor but no apparent way to get Win7 to use them.  The display is listed as Default Monitor via Desktop-rightclick>Screen Resolution>Advanced Properties>Monitor and the driver button is greyed out.  A display does not even show up in Device Manager!  The net result is that my monitor is running half the resolution it should.

Any suggestions as to the way forward please?  Sort of stuck at this point.

I don't suppose there is a drop down menu showing your monitor in your display preferences (long shot).

How about your graphics driver control panel stuff, anything useful in there?

Generally I don't use my graphics drivers on my Dell 22" but it picks it up automatically though it is a much lower resolution as a generic 1680x1050 (correct for my monitor).

Does the monitor require dual DVI, and if so are you sure both are connected properly and your graphics drivers setup to deal with this aspect. Not sure how it works, but I would guess it's something to do with this.

What he said! Sometimes it picks up HDMI, VGA or DVI better that what you are using (you can also get hold of HDMI into DVI if its required)

Just following on from this as I recently had the chance to bang my head against it in an attempt to resolve this issue:

I believe the monitor not being recognised is a red-herring.  The problem is that the graphics drivers will not install properly, which as the monitor is plugged in via the graphics card means it is not recognised properly.

64bit Win7 Ultimate
ASUS Rampage Formula Rev 1.xx with 0902 bios & latest X48 drivers from ASUS website
9800GX2 (working good when I boot from an XP Pro disk)

So how to get the nVidia graphics drivers to install?

I've tried a variety of things, but each time I get:

-yellow exclamation in device manager against both 9800GX2 cores (error 43)
-if I disable a core then re-enable it the core seems to activate, but not with nVidia resolution options and after a reboot both cores are disabled again (error 43)
-nVidia control panel, PhysX & Drivers showing in add/remove programs, but not in program listing (ie not picking up the gfx card)
-resolution stuck at 1600x1200 on a monitor that does 2560x1600 when I boot the same hardware up from XP Pro.

Tried a number of drivers:
182.50 } older vista drivers which were rumoured to solve 'monitor' type problems for other W7 64 systems
186.18 }
196.21
197.13
257.21

Done multiple 'proper' installs:
-Device Manager>right click uninstall on the 9800GX2
-Add/Remove nVidia software via control panel
-emptied recyle bin
-reboot safe mode
-run driver sweeper to remove all nVidia
-reboot normally into W7 64
-install nVidia drivers
-reboot normally

All i get following that procedure is the yellow exclamation marks in device manager, 1600x1200 instead of 2560x1600 and a system running on my onboard VGA graphics chip instead of the water-cooled 9800GX2.  Of course the hardware works fine if I boot from an XP Pro 32 partition instead of the W7 64 partition.

As I'm just about at the end of the line in terms of what I do next I figured it was an appropriate time to cry for some help.  Any suggestions?

The Asus Rampage doesn't have on-board graphics so it is always your GX2 that is working just the drivers are not being used for some reason.

Have you checked the Asus site for bios updates?   Are the chipset drivers Win7 compatable?

I know neither of these is directly related to the graphics but maybe Win7 addresses the graphics cards differently or something.

The one place you are likely to get an answer to this is on the overclockers forums here   definately worth signing up and trying, a lot of knowledgable people on there ( a lot of idiots as well of course.)

Maybe its the god of upgrades sending you a message..........

Interesting, I'd just assumed it was onboard gfx as I was not getting my normal 2560x1600 and none of the nVidia control panel stuff.  Thanks for that!

BIOS is almost the newest, there is one newer, but it has only one minor change to allow an additional key to be pressed during boot up, no other changes on it so I left it at version 0902.

I've registered on the Overclockers site, will try to post there when the account is activated, good suggestion.

The story continues:

My normal XP Pro Raid0 decided to play up this past week and is now not booting at all.  BIOS level drive health checks suggest the disks are fine, but that points the finger at the Adaptec Raid Controller card.  So for the moment I am forced to boot via my Win7 SSD with non-working graphics card.  This has led me to suspect:

My 9800GX2 graphics card may not be working properly at the moment.  The card is a dual PCB setup and has 4 general areas where there are some LEDs on it:  on each PCB there is one by the power plug (lights up and when plugged in & powered up) and another at the other end next to the case bracket which I suspect is an 'operational' LED and should light up when the PCB is working.

Both 'power' LEDs are lit up.

The primary PCB has the case bracket LED lit up, the second PCB's 'operational' LED is not lit up.  So perhaps my 9800GX2 has a dead core?

I vaguely recall that in XP Pro in device manager - and for as long as I can remember - both cores showed up but only one was showing as fully operational.  As it was happily running at 2560x1600 I figured it was just a nuance of a dual PCB single slot graphics card, but I suspect now it was possibly a failed PCB/core?  As it was installed in XP when full working perhaps the card was picked up properly by the drivers.  The subsequent install under W7 may have not picked up the graphics card as it was 50% broken?

So I have ordered another graphics card (which should arrive some time today) to test this theory.  It's an expensive way to check to see if a component is dead, but a 5850 will have to do.  If it plugs in and W7 picks it up right away then I'll be very happy.  But then another issue will kick in:

The 9800GX2 is water-cooled, so any new card will then mean a system drain, breakup of the current loops, purchase & fitting of a new GPU full cover block, re-plumbing and then a system refill.  So the 5850 will fitted as air-cooled intially with the 9800GX2 still in the water-cooling loops.  If it solves the problem I will go get the block & tubing etc to fit it properly.  If it does not solve the problem then I'll have a Ã,£230 air-cooled 5850 for sale.......

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!

New card installed, booted up first time, immediately offered me 2560x1600 resolution, monitor picked up properly as a 30" DELL.  PROBLEM FINALLY SOLVED!!!!!  Faulty graphics card was the problem.  Damn that one took a while to figure out.

Haha, one happy man here.

Now to resolve the plumbing - I have a PC with a 5850 air-cooled gfx card installed and a couple of water pipes hanging out of the side of my case from which a now surplus (and broken) 9800GX2 is still plumbed in to the cooling loops.

:D Glad you got it sorted!

Does that mean you can dump your XP install now and just use Windows 7?

TeaLeaf

Aye, particularly as the XP raid0 has just given up the ghost.  I now on W7 full-time via the SSD and am glad to be here!
