It's helps prevent yoru account being hacked by providing a one-time use additional code that needs to be entered when you log in. So people might have hacked your PC and got your username & login, but they will still not have the authenticator code which means they cannot log in to your account.

Arse, I've just bought the authenticator from Blizzard. I got core hound pup though, so that's something.
