Wow, really not what I'd expect from a movie of the franchise. Looks good if a little "Over" acted. Might have to check it out.

It looks a bit more interesting than the more kid orientated films that have preceded it, are video game films finally realising that its adults that buy the most games & not kids?

smilodon

I'm certainly not unimpressed. Maybe they'll do well and give us  a 'Batman Begins' reinvention? :) Or maybe they'll screwup and we'll get more of a Terminator Salvation?

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Wow, that seems to have potential :)

Great story, dreadful acting, decent Chinese/South American fighting - a must see :D Cheers for the heads up!

JonnyAppleSeed

Its got to be better than any of the other fight games made into movies .. street fighter was possibly the worst film ever made and the other mortal combat films were close behind. In fact just the small trailer beats them all. looking forward to it

I heard something interesting regarding this today. Filmpolitiet, a Norwegian radio blog mainly about movies, reported that this actually is not a trailer for a new Mortal Combat movie.

This short movie is directed by Kevin Tancharoen and is actually kind of a "job application". It is Warner Brothers who sits on the rights for any Mortal Combat movie, and they knew nothing about this. Tancharoen (known for amongst others the new version of Fame) would simply like to show what his idea of a Mortal Combat movie would be like, and also he felt he had something to prove, as nobody would hire a man with his background for directing a Mortal Combat movie. collider.com has the interview used as a source by Filmpolitiet.

So I guess we can only hope that Warner Brothers likes this "application", hires Tancharoen and uses his story as a base for the new movie :)

I find it hard to believe. The levels of special effects, choreography and set quality all seem far too high to be an solo application. That or he has made himself a very expensive hobby using his contacts in the business. If it's true he deserves some serious respect for calling in some massive favours and investing what must have been a good chunk of cash into it.

I got to agree with you that I it might be hard to believe. But if you take a look at the interview on collider.com - which is a pretty long one btw - you'll get some details. From the summary you'll see amongst other things:

Quote
  • Started in early April and it took 2 months to do the post production.  Most people donated their time.  The short was made for $7,500
  • No one at any studio knew he was doing the short
Now I do not know how good a source that site is, but I suppose that if it was all bullshit we would have heard something about it...
