MrLogik was looking for a big urban environment to try out some CQC stuff and we had the ArmA poll up. Seems many people do have ArmA 2. For those who don't it now seems vanilla multi player ArmA 2 is free, so there's no big barrier to getting it.

With the request from MrLogik plus the possibility that new blood might try out ArmA 2 (not least from our own community) would it not be an idea to throw up an ArmA 2 server, play the CQC missions and possibly offer an open evening for the rest of dMw who don't have the game yet to download the freebie and jump on for an evening?

We could find something easy to play so 1. new players would not be overwhelmed by the learning curve and 2. We'd actually look like we had a clue how to play the game properly ourselves :)

It's tempting, but I think we should wait until the 'free' version of AII is released.

We should also bare in mind that the AII engine is inferiour to the version used in OA. If your PC only just runs OA, then AII might cause you problems.

Why can't we just run the CQC stuff on an OA map?

My thoughts on this are

Is it worth the amount of work for what I understand is Insurgency using the Arma 2 models and a map from the Arma2?  Which IMHO is a lump compared to OA and I feel we will be going backwards rather than forward.  Further more we have insurgency map on our OA server which I believed (please correct me) has not been used for sometime. True it is not a CQB city map.  Also as far as I can see that there are very little other missions that use Fallujah apart from the one in question.

I agree there is a chance that new players might try out but tbh I would tell them to jump in and get OA. As I remember Arma 2 not being a very forgiving mistress.  As for jumping in for a evening this game is not something that you can just pick up and run with.  There is a steep curve which we can help with but it takes sometime to get your eye in.

If we go ahead with it we would only be changing the one server. Which will impact on the public server and if we are going to use this as a tool to get more ppl to play with us we wont be able to lock it down or make persistent.   Or do we stick it on the Private server and keep it to members only?

Any other thoughts and please let me know if you disagree with my thoughts.  I am sure there will be more from me on this later :)

I have to admit that I was one of the originals when we set up an ArmA 2 server, and it was the fact that it was a pain to launch and log onto was one of the reasons I didn't stick around. So I totally understand if we don't want to set up another server.

What's the town where Benny mad his find the car keys, steal the 4x4's and run away map? That seemed a fair size?

Well my feelings have not changed and after discussions with most of you I think it would be a mistake to make one of the servers Arma 2, it too much work for too little reward and is a step backwards.

I will let the community know.

I belive the "Free ArmA II" will also not be able to run any mod's, so we probably wouldn't be able to run any of our old missions on it.
