Ahh, the genius of Stewart Lee.

The man is indeed a genius and needs to do much more TV, if only in the hope that it might mean Russell Howard does less.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Flicking through a few more of his sketches I found this on Top Gear. I think I might actually be Stewart Lee seeing as how exactly he nails my utter loathing for Richard Hammond :D

Possibly the best summary of the Top Gear/Hamster brand yet.

I do like James May though, he's not bad and has done some decent TV. Of course that's the trouble with you tube, someone posts a link to a video and you then spend the whole evening watching all the other links associated with it. I spent ages checking out every Steward Lee video on You-tube.

I watched the first video, didn't laugh once, watched the first 8 mins of the second video and also didn't laugh once. I've reached the opinion that he just isn't funny.

Thinking about the stuff he said I can see myself laughing at it if it were delivered correctly, but his timing of the delivery and the level of repetition are both poor. I think he's trying to be Jack Dee, but with Alzheimer's and no sense of comedy and he's also in a bad mood because just before the gigs he's been informed of some tragedy involving his life partner (I'm going to go with "Derrick") which is ultimately his fault. My gut feeling is he's been told that "Derrick" was scolded beyond recognition because Stewart had left the steam setting of the iron on maximum and due to his injuries he'll never sunbathe again, and it's made more tragic because Derrick was Mr Tan '09 and lists it under his hobbies section on facebook.

To summarise, I don't find him funny. He delivers his lines like he genuinely despises the subjects and tries to mask it as a bad joke, which is not something I feel comfortable laughing with, but the lines themselves could possibly be funny in the hands of someone else.

I think he's like a lot of comedians that aren't middle of the road average stand up types. He's quite polarising as you either think he's a complete genius or crap. Chris Morris is the same, some consider him to be the finest satirist alive and others think he's an offensive lout.

It's true though that it's as much about delivery as it is content as you mention that you like the jokes but not the delivery. I'm sure Ian Hislop is a funny guy but I loath his style on Have I got News for You so much I cannot sit in the same room as the TV when he's on. He's clever and witty and observant but for me he oozes arrogant, condescending smugness and  I just want to punch him in the face until I pass out from exhaustion.
