All our Gods have abandoned us.

Just fired this up for a couple of rounds of Deathmatch.

VERY impressive for such an early build. The movement & weapons feel spot on. Toxxik won't hold a candle to this....

Yeah lion, ninja, nameinuse played it was great. Felt like the good old days and there is still some work but it is solid for a pre alpha.

Any idea if we can host our own servers? I must admit I'm very disappointed with the Toxikk server support as we can't seem to join our own server.

You only seem to have played 20min on Toxikk. Is that enough to draw a conclusion? Have you played the latest maps? Tried the new guns?

Fair point - it deserves another crack if they've added some more content. There's something about UT that just feels so.... right, that Toxikk doesn't have. Subtle differences in the way the movement feels, the way the weapons react - I can't nail it down exactly, but it's got a pedigree feel to it.

UT has full dedicated server support for Windows and Linux. Total customisation; mutators, mods, custom maps etc. Details on how to set it up are here: https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Servers_(Unreal_Tournament)

Which is kinda the point.

I've been away from the FPS scene since about 2003, probably earlier. My benchmark game is the original Unreal Tournament. Of which I spent more hours in than is healthy and won the Division 2 Jolt UK championship one year. Wooo, go me.

So based, on the recent thread, Toxikk is awesome and like 99 (ie, the UT year) I decided to give it a punt. It's a very fun game and the pace is really nice. The graphics are good, the new 0.8 patch has toned game the graphics a little so you can see the players more compared to the previous patch.
Today, I found this thread and downloaded the UT2014 alpha and gave it 40 mins playtime.
So, here's my 2c.

UT2014 has the better guns by far. Which is really odd seeing as they're pretty much unchanged since UT99. 15 years of development and experience and hardly any change? But heh, what is the best is still the best.
But weapons are not everthing ..... I found UT2014 stale and felt something was missing.
Toxikk has everything else better, with the exception that players are harder to spot as the landscape is a lot more detailed .... which can be distracting. But it still looks good.

I really really want UT2014 to be the better game, but currently it's not. I think it's let down by the basic maps, some remakes of UT99 maps. Let us be fair, the maps are better looking than UT99 but the benchmark in the game is Outpost23. If they removed ALL the other maps and added another of the same quality as Outpost23 for say CTF ANd they improved the movement I might be tempted to say that UT2014 is better.

On a parting note, I can run Toxikk @ max details 2560x1440 but have to run UT2014 @ 1980x1024 with some settings turned down to get equivalent frames. And UT2014 looks a lot worse with a supposedly better engine!
So yeah, this lad wants UT99 guns in Toxikk then it's like heaven .... I can dream :)

albert

I have to say Toxikk gets my vote and their intentions are right. I never had a great deal of time on UT in any era but tried UT14 and immediately removed it from the PC. Gotta move on guys, server connection issues could be our own doing and the Toxikk devs are really clued up.
Cheers, Bert

Bumpity Bump

Just had a few games of instagib and I'm still lovin this. Physics and music (yea baby) are the same, but graphics is brought up to date. If you used to play UT you MUST get this. It's free FFS!  https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtournament/
