Going into battle without a leader is almost as stupid as going in without a weapon. If no leader is assigned you have to step up. It is important to the team to know what to do and how to act. The leader should use the individual skills of his team members and the knowledge of the map to lay out the strategy for the team.

A leader is usually chosen by mutual consent rather than by saying “Who wants to be the leader then?” On the other hand, if your team is milling around leaderless but if you don’t have any ideas then it can be useful to ask “So what is the plan?” Whoever comes up with a plan also tends to become the leader for that round.

It is most important that the leader tells the team of his strategy and not only parts of it. The team leader should use the time after spawning to discuss the plan.

It is very common that the team splits up in many small groups. It is wise but not necessary to assign group leaders to those groups. The team leader can act as group leader also. By doing this he can give orders to the group leader via voice and the group will immediately know that it is their group that is addressed i.e. no need for repeating the orders.

It is very good for the spirit of the team to switch leaders. Be team leader 3-5 rounds then switch. Let everybody try to realize their strategic thought on a map. In time you will know if you are suited as a team leader, group leader or a grunt.
