my ping's gone mental

for some reason i don't know if its me or my connection or steam but my ping is in the hundreds and i cant get it down plz help,even when im looking 4 a server they r in the hundreds as well, sometimes.
my rates r 12000
my cl_cmd and updaterate r 101 + ive used blueballs 1.6 tweaks
the only other thing i can think of is the modem it sometimes won't dissconnect from the net and have to reset the computer,it's not the computer because it used to happen on me old computer.
somethink to do with the connections tray it says
wot i am getting is loads of ms witch is situated to the left of fps,i just can@t get it down ,my fps r a solid 70

Is your connection stable out of cs, what company are you using have you phoned them to see if there are any faults? As that was a problem i had and they had to relay the cable under our street due to low bandwith and it kept cutting off.

If you are on Modem I think you should avoid having rates at 12000. You should try to lower it to 2500-3500 or similar. If you have it at 12000 you are flooding the modem that can't handle that amount of transfer rates. Get on the server and try reducing the settings. The CL_cmd and the other you could try 50 or so. Pushing them up that high requires a cable connection at least.

It could also be your cablecompany doing some stuff out there because you said you didn't had it yesterday.

Check your Steam monitor.  Mine says it is not updating any game, but it is actually using 120kbps whilst 'not updating'.

but i found out wot it was ,
 :oops:  :withstupid:  :oops: automaticly changed my cl_updaterate and cmdrate to 101.(thats wot i used on me OLD computer)
when infact the
                       : cl_updaterate needs to be 10
                       : cl_cmdrate 20
                       :  rate 12000

Ive just installed steam on this pc and all ive changed is my rate maybe me might need to check the cmdrate and updaterate seems to be working well on this one and i just got the latest drivers for my gf4 mx440 i know it will be replaced as soon as hl2 comes out because i dont think it will run it as it is now.

Those rates may be applicable to someone on 56k, but anyone with a broadband connection should be using much higher for maximum effect.  I myself use 80 for both and it servs me well.  Btw if ypu are on 56k then the rate setting (12000) is way too high so it looks to me like your got half the correct rates for any connection.

The rate calculator I made see here says that for 56k on meathook you should use something in the region of the following figures:
