so i ... err stumbled across this little interesting piece of information.. aka bored and thought i`d see what happens

you need to do the following things to make it work (try it and see!)

http://maps.google.co.uk/

OK, open the above link, and click get directions

in the top box type the shire
in the second box type mordor

hit enter/return

you`ll get a route map

now for the fun bit, click the little man(get walking directions) and see what happens

Err it gives me directions from The Shire, St. Albans Road, Hertfordshire to Mordor, Kooltuin 8 , 1811 MG Alkmaar, Netherlands and lets me know the route uses a ferry and private roads. Oh and it will take 48 hours to do the 260 miles. So somethings not working for me? No sign of an Orc anywhere ?

It only works on the old version of google maps. If you're on the new beta version it won't do anything.

Ah well I'm a Google fan boy of the first order, so on the latest version of everything. Which explains why it's not working for me.
