Official announcement

At last my world is complete. Google are going to release a new feature for Android that lets a user force their phone to ring when they can't find it at home, track it on Google maps when they've lost it completely and wipe it remotely if it gets stolen. It's been available on other Android manufacturers phones and iPhones for a while and there are 3rd party apps that have had this feature. But it's really something that should be built into the OS and available for free. So it's good to see it's coming to native Android

It will be available on Android 2.2 or above from later this month.

And it's up and running on both my nexus 4 and 7. Pretty basic but does the main stuff.

Ok, so I know I'm an unusual case (using a UK sim whilst in France so no permanent data connection - just wifi), but the phone is completely off grid. So if you lose your phone, or it gets stolen and you'd turned data off to save power...it could be useless.

I'd suggest that they add more complex power saving options with this so the phone "checks in" once a day to see if it's missing and perform an erase if requested.

As far as I'm aware if the phone is off line or turned off when it gets sent a wipe command it will action it as soon as the phone is on and can receive the command either through cellular or wifi. It did take a little while for my phone to 'appear' on Googles system though, it showed as off line for about 10 minutes after I activated they feature.

I've enabled it on mine and it's nice to see this as a default feature on Android - it's pretty darned accurate too, within 19m for me!
