A commander has done some interesting tests to establish the causes of Wear and Tear on ships. Useful information if planning a long trip.

QuoteResult #1: W&T is linearly correlated to the distance travelled. 100000Ls will generate 1% of W&T. That means you will  reach 100% after 10 million Ls.
QuoteResult #2: Throttle setting has NO effect on W&T. Also the maximum speed reached has NO effect on W&T. Only the amount of distance travelled is creating W&T
QuoteResult #3: W&T percentage is completely independent of the type of equipped modules. W&T was always the same.
QuoteResult #4: Hyper-jumps do not contribute in any measurable way to W&T.
QuoteResult #5: Normal flight has no measurable contribution to W&T.
QuoteResult #6: Prolonged time of excessive heat caused by internal systems is not causing W&T
QuoteResult #7: Staying in the vicinity of stars seems to have a very  minor effect on W&T. The 10 minutes in the experiment resulted in an  equivalent W&T caused by ~6000 Ls, which would be ~0.06%.

QuoteResults: W&T cost is only dependent on the cost of the  equipped modules. It doesn't matter what type of module is used it is  only the total sum of all equipped modules that create the total W&T  cost based on the W&T percentage value.

One interesting titbit...
QuoteThere seems to be a bug, that W&T costs are calculated based on the  summed module cost which was active at the time of loading the game.  This can be exploited in such a way, that one could sell all modules,  save and exit and restart the game. The W&T cost will now be much  lower. Pay the W&T bill and re-equip all the modules again.
