The new AMD R390 cards are due in the next few weeks, they sport the new HBM technology.

Explanation and significance here.

The improvement will be on the iteration after these.

The 300 series will be limited to 4GB afaik.

Lol Ninj, tbh mate not enough is known about performance yet to say anything. There very well may be 8 Gb cards (using 2Gb ram stacks) and no one knows what sort of performance increases are coming, and even if 4Gb cards will be a hindrance at all due to the massive bandwidth increase.

What is definite is that  HBM will be cooler running , use less power and will also be used by Nvidia next year.

Tell me about it, I was eagerly awaiting the next big thing from AMD, hoping for some real market competition, only to see another bloody rehash/relabel GPU..

As it stands, AMD 300 series with HBM memory are limited to 4GB due to HBM limitations which should be solved by the next alteration (400?).  This was said by AMD themselves.

Imo, they shouldn't have bothered releasing half-baked tech with limiations.. They are literally shooting themselves.

Latest leak, Lion may be getting his wallet out.

If the numbers are correct, its fairly impressive they managed to pull that much performance out of whats mainly a refresh with the addition of HBM, yet only increasing TDP with 10w

If they maintain their agressive price model, they could be a nice card.

Likng it. The wallet trembles in anticipation of a crash diet......

That's the $550 model right?

The inclusion of closed loops will be a good selling point for those who until now were still citing the higher AMD TDP woes of past decades.

Yea.  I think it will be in short supply for a while, but the thing that interests me is the large power over head which could mean some serious overclocking capabilities.

Good lord, it's a monster.

It will be very interesting to see if this thing has a noticeable affect on ATI's fortunes - they seem to be getting killed by Nvidia in the mid-range right now, despite the horrible PR Nvidia's had recently.
